The travelling carnival of this Irpinian village, featuring masks, colors, and music through the town center
The Senerchia Carnival is the most colorful winter event in this small town in the province of Avellino, nestled at an altitude of about 600 meters in the Upper Sele Valley, on the eastern slopes of the Picentini Mountains. With just over seven hundred inhabitants, Senerchia is one of those villages where the festival is not organized for mass tourism, but for the community: it is the families, the youth, and the volunteers of the Pro Loco Senerchia APS who build the event, sewing costumes, preparing masks, and enlivening the afternoon with music.
The result is a genuine carnival, accessible to everyone, which well represents the tradition of Irpinian carnivals in Campania: no large installations or stages, but the village itself as a stage, with its alleys, small squares, and houses overlooking the procession.
The formula chosen by the organizers is that of the travelling Carnival. The meeting point is set in Piazza Garibaldi, the heart of the town, where masks and groups gather before the start. From there, the procession moves along the streets of the center, accompanied by music, gradually involving those who appear at their doorways or join in along the way.
The finale is hosted in the Oratory, where the procession breaks up and the day continues with the final party: a moment designed especially for children, who can continue to dance and play indoors, and for adults who gather to chat over seasonal sweets.
It is a festival that lasts only a few hours, but has the merit of being authentically communal: in Senerchia, the Carnival is not a show to watch, it is something you take part in.
Those who choose to stay in the village will discover a surprising territory. Senerchia is part of the Picentini Mountains Regional Park and houses the Valle della Caccia Natural Oasis, a protected area managed by the WWF in the Vallone Trientale, famous for the Acquabianca waterfall and an intact ecosystem. In the milder months, the oasis is a destination for hiking and nature visits, perfectly complementing a day dedicated to folk traditions.
The local festival calendar does not end with Carnival: the Pro Loco Senerchia APS also organizes the Typical Products Market Exhibition «Sagra del Maiale», a historic gastronomic event in the town scheduled between April and May, while the patron saint Saint Michael the Archangel is celebrated on May 8th and September 29th.
The Senerchia Carnival has no monumental floats or large crowds, and for this very reason, it may interest those looking for the less-trodden paths of Irpinia: an afternoon of masks and music in a mountain village, with the opportunity to get to know a small but very active community up close. For those visiting inland Campania in winter, it is a simple and sincere opportunity to get into the rhythm of village life.
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, Senerchia, in the province of Avellino, experienced its Carnival day with a now-recognizable formula: that of the travelling Carnival, dedicated to color and music.
The meeting point was set for 4:00 PM in Piazza Garibaldi. From there, the procession started and crossed the streets of the center, transforming the town into an explosion of masks and involving young and old along the way. The parade concluded with the arrival at the Oratory, where the final party took place.
The initiative was promoted by the Pro Loco Senerchia APS and was part of the rich calendar of Irpinian carnivals, which every year animate dozens of villages in inland Campania in the weeks leading up to Lent.
Event organized by the Pro Loco Senerchia APS. The published program did not include further events beyond those indicated.
Senerchia is located in the Upper Sele Valley, at the south-eastern end of the province of Avellino, on the border with the Salerno area. It is easily reached by car from the Sele valley floor, following the signs for the town center; the Carnival meeting point is in Piazza Garibaldi, in the heart of the town. Public transport connections are limited and tied to the extra-urban buses serving the towns of Upper Irpinia: it is advisable to check the timetables in advance.
The procession crosses the streets of the historic center: it is advisable to leave the car in the available spaces at the entrance to the town and continue on foot. The streets are on a slope, so it is best to wear comfortable shoes.
A few minutes from the center is the Valle della Caccia Natural Oasis, with trails leading to the Acquabianca waterfall; within a few kilometers, you can visit the other villages of Upper Irpinia and the Sele Valley.
