About Senerchia Carnival

The Senerchia Carnival is the masked festival of a small village in the Upper Sele Valley, in the province of Avellino. Organized by the Pro Loco Senerchia APS, it is a travelling carnival: the meeting point is Piazza Garibaldi in the early afternoon, followed by a procession through the town center filled with music and color, ending at the Oratory for the final party. It is a simple, community-focused event designed primarily for families and children, transforming the town into an explosion of masks for a few hours.

A village carnival at the foot of the Picentini Mountains

The Senerchia Carnival is the most colorful winter event in this small town in the province of Avellino, nestled at an altitude of about 600 meters in the Upper Sele Valley, on the eastern slopes of the Picentini Mountains. With just over seven hundred inhabitants, Senerchia is one of those villages where the festival is not organized for mass tourism, but for the community: it is the families, the youth, and the volunteers of the Pro Loco Senerchia APS who build the event, sewing costumes, preparing masks, and enlivening the afternoon with music.

The result is a genuine carnival, accessible to everyone, which well represents the tradition of Irpinian carnivals in Campania: no large installations or stages, but the village itself as a stage, with its alleys, small squares, and houses overlooking the procession.

A travelling procession through the town center

The formula chosen by the organizers is that of the travelling Carnival. The meeting point is set in Piazza Garibaldi, the heart of the town, where masks and groups gather before the start. From there, the procession moves along the streets of the center, accompanied by music, gradually involving those who appear at their doorways or join in along the way.

The finale is hosted in the Oratory, where the procession breaks up and the day continues with the final party: a moment designed especially for children, who can continue to dance and play indoors, and for adults who gather to chat over seasonal sweets.

Who participates and how to experience the day

  • Families and children: the afternoon timing and the short route make the event suitable even for the little ones.
  • Masked groups: homemade costumes, traditional folk masks, and modern disguises coexist without hierarchy.
  • Curious visitors: those arriving from outside can simply join the procession, without formalities or registration.

It is a festival that lasts only a few hours, but has the merit of being authentically communal: in Senerchia, the Carnival is not a show to watch, it is something you take part in.

Senerchia beyond the Carnival

Those who choose to stay in the village will discover a surprising territory. Senerchia is part of the Picentini Mountains Regional Park and houses the Valle della Caccia Natural Oasis, a protected area managed by the WWF in the Vallone Trientale, famous for the Acquabianca waterfall and an intact ecosystem. In the milder months, the oasis is a destination for hiking and nature visits, perfectly complementing a day dedicated to folk traditions.

The local festival calendar does not end with Carnival: the Pro Loco Senerchia APS also organizes the Typical Products Market Exhibition «Sagra del Maiale», a historic gastronomic event in the town scheduled between April and May, while the patron saint Saint Michael the Archangel is celebrated on May 8th and September 29th.

Why it is worth visiting

The Senerchia Carnival has no monumental floats or large crowds, and for this very reason, it may interest those looking for the less-trodden paths of Irpinia: an afternoon of masks and music in a mountain village, with the opportunity to get to know a small but very active community up close. For those visiting inland Campania in winter, it is a simple and sincere opportunity to get into the rhythm of village life.
