The Baroque festival in the city of Foligno
Among the historic festivals of Umbria, the Segni Barocchi Festival has been the major event since 1981 that ignites Foligno, in the province of Perugia, at the end of summer. The event focuses on the city's Baroque identity — visible in the facades of its palaces, the interiors of its churches, and its artistic and literary production — and reinterprets it through contemporary theatre, music, and performing arts.
The festival is not a simple re-enactment: it investigates the typically Baroque tension between appearance and truth, between power and conscience, between representation and reality. To do this, it alternates great 17th-century texts, modern reinterpretations, ancient music concerts, and collective actions in the most evocative spaces of the historic centre: the Auditorium San Domenico, the Oratorio del Crocifisso, the courtyard of Palazzo Trinci, the Teatro San Carlo.
Since 2024, the artistic direction has been entrusted to actor and director Daniele Salvo, who has given the festival a strong theatrical focus, capable of attracting nationally renowned performers to Foligno. The festival also engages with the Giostra della Quintana, Foligno's famous Baroque re-enactment, reinforcing the link between tradition and the city's identity.
The symbolic moment is the Baroque Night, which closes the festival: for one evening, the entire centre of Foligno becomes a stage, with performances, guided tours, and a city-as-theatre that remains open until late at night. Promoted by the Municipality of Foligno with the support of the Umbria Region, the festival confirms Umbria as one of Italy's regions richest in widespread culture.
The 46th edition of the Segni Barocchi Festival brings the theme "Life is a Dream" to Foligno, inspired by Calderón de la Barca's play, chosen as the thematic and formal key for the entire event. Under the artistic direction of Daniele Salvo, the festival offers readings of great texts, ancient music concerts, and theatrical performances in the city's most beautiful spaces.
The 2026 edition is linked to the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Giostra della Quintana, confirming the relationship between the festival and Foligno's great Baroque tradition. Grand finale with the Baroque Night, which transforms the historic centre into a widespread theatre.
