The age-old rite of the Passion among the torches of the village of Montefiore Conca
In the heart of the Alta Valconca, the village of Montefiore Conca (province of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna) preserves one of the most ancient and evocative religious traditions of the area: the Secular Procession of Good Friday. Every year, on the evening of Good Friday, the cobbled streets of the historic center go dark to make way for the light of torches and fires, while a procession of figures in period costume re-enacts the Passion of Christ.
The procession stages the descent of Jesus from Golgotha and the deposition of his body in the Holy Sepulchre. The route winds through the village, accompanying the figure of the dead Christ to the little Church of the Hospital, which for the occasion symbolically becomes the Sepulchre. It is a rite rich in symbolism, with continuous references to the Holy Scriptures and Christian ritual, whose origins are lost in time.
Giving substance to the re-enactment are about a hundred figures in historical costume, who recreate along the streets of Montefiore Conca a snapshot of Jerusalem two thousand years ago. Among them parade:
The procession makes a significant stop at the Parish Church of San Paolo, where it pauses for a solemn moment of reflection before resuming its journey towards the little Church of the Hospital. Here, the final and most intense part of the rite is completed, with the traditional prayer, the distribution of blessed bread to the faithful, and the opportunity to kiss the Christ: a gesture of devotion that has always represented the most intimate and participatory conclusion to the celebration.
Organized by the Municipal Administration of Montefiore Conca together with the Pro Loco, the procession is one of the most cherished events in the village and attracts faithful and visitors from all over the Province of Rimini and the nearby Romagna region every year. Included among the Easter rites of the Valconca, it represents a precious opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in the Rimini hinterland, dominated by the imposing Malatesta Fortress.
For 2026, the Secular Procession of Good Friday once again illuminated the village of Montefiore Conca on Friday, April 3rd. Confraternities, apostles, pious women, and little angels recreated the re-enactment of Christ's Passion and deposition along the streets of the historic center, concluding at the little Church of the Hospital with the distribution of blessed bread.
The procession takes place on the evening of Good Friday. In 2026, the event is on Friday, April 3rd, with a narrative introduction at 9:15 PM and the procession starting at 9:30 PM.
