The last navigable trabaccolo of the Adriatic returns to the port where it was born a hundred years ago
From June 20 to 22, 2026, the port of Cattolica, in the Province of Rimini, welcomes a return full of meaning: that of Il Nuovo Trionfo, the last navigable trabaccolo of the Upper Adriatic. The historic vessel returns to the very waters where it all began a century ago, to celebrate the centenary of its launch. This is an exceptional historical event: thirteen years after the last time the centenarian returned to port, Cattolica embraces again one of the most precious testimonies of the traditional seafaring of Emilia-Romagna and the entire Adriatic.
Il Nuovo Trionfo was launched on May 27, 1926, at the shipyard of Ferdinando Ubalducci, right in Cattolica, on behalf of shipowners Ferdinando Ubalducci, Vincenzo Morosini, and Colombo Prioli. With its approximately 18 meters in length and 6 in width, the trabaccolo was born as a sailing cargo vessel, used for transporting goods across the Adriatic and later converted for port dredging work between Trieste and Monfalcone. Its long life has seen it through a century of transformations in Adriatic navigation, becoming the last example still capable of sailing the seas.
Acquired in 2008 by the Compagnia della Marineria Tradizionale Il Nuovo Trionfo, based in Venice, the vessel underwent an impressive restoration lasting about twenty-one months, from February 2024 to November 2025, with its relaunch on November 20, 2025. The return to Cattolica for the centenary crowns this rebirth: the boat arrives in the port of the Queen as part of the Centenary Cruise, a journey that symbolically brings it back to its birthplace.
For three days, the trabaccolo remains moored in the port, allowing itself to be admired and discovered through a calendar of meetings and initiatives focused on the vessel's history and a glimpse into its era. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Cattolica together with the Museo della Regina and the municipal cultural services, with the collaboration of the Casa del Pescatore, ANMI Cattolica, and the association La Canta. As highlighted by the deputy mayor Federico Vaccarini, this is a living link with the maritime and shipbuilding past of a city that, thanks to its shipyards, was a point of reference for the entire Adriatic seafaring community.
For the first time in thirteen years, Il Nuovo Trionfo returns to the waters of the port of Cattolica, where it was launched in 1926. The vessel, recently relaunched after a long restoration, arrives as part of the Centenary Cruise and remains moored for three days, from June 20 to 22, 2026. The Museo della Regina, along with the Cultural Services of the Municipality of Cattolica, welcomes the trabaccolo with a calendar of valorization events dedicated to its hundred-year history and the city's shipbuilding tradition.
The Casa del Pescatore, ANMI of Cattolica, and the association La Canta collaborate in the celebration, testifying to the community's strong connection with its maritime identity.
The detailed program for the three days, including times and locations of individual initiatives, will be announced by the organizers closer to the event. The organizers have stated that they will soon unveil the calendar of the three days of initiatives open to the city.
According to communications from the Municipality of Cattolica and the Museo della Regina, meetings and in-depth sessions dedicated to the vessel's history and a glimpse into its era are planned, while the trabaccolo remains moored in the port and visible throughout the event.
