The Milazzo Carnival featuring allegorical floats, a children's village, and maritime traditions
The Sea Carnival is the signature carnival event of Milazzo, a city overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the province of Messina, Sicily. Born in 2024 from a desire to bring a long-forgotten local tradition back to life, the event has quickly become one of the most anticipated highlights of the Milazzo winter calendar, drawing families, children, and visitors to the city streets and the seafront.
The heart of the festival is the parade of floats and allegorical scenes, which winds through the city center, starting from Via Luigi Rizzo and reaching the seafront and Piazza della Repubblica. The floats, crafted with great artisanal skill, are created by local parishes, numerous associations, schools, dance academies, and cultural groups. Themes range from the myth of Ulysses to the Punic Wars, and from the legend of Colapesce to creations dedicated to the city of Milazzo and its ancient maritime heritage, from which the event takes its name.
Alongside the parades, the festival features a Carnival village designed for children and families, complete with a playground, inflatables, entertainment, and fun activities. The space is managed by the Mylae Events APS association in collaboration with local businesses, aiming to create synergies between local groups and merchants while enhancing the city's social and commercial fabric.
Throughout the days, there is no shortage of live music, DJ sets, and performances accompanying the costumed groups along the route. Past editions have also featured guest comedians and social moments tied to the gastronomic traditions of the Sicilian Carnival, with a final awards ceremony for the best costumes and floats to close the festivities.
The Sea Carnival represents a prime example of how a popular tradition can be recovered and relaunched through active community participation. Nestled in the heart of the province of Messina, the event blends the folklore of Carnival with the scenic beauty of the Capo di Milazzo, offering residents and tourists three days of color, joy, and Sicilian identity.
The third edition of the Sea Carnival was held in Milazzo from February 14 to 17, 2026. The festival kicked off on Saturday, February 14, with the opening of the Carnival village at 5:00 PM in the former Ritrovo Diana area, featuring a playground, entertainers, inflatables, and fun activities managed by the Mylae Events APS association together with Smile Factory and Cartoon Park IBBA.
The parades of floats and allegorical scenes began on Sunday, February 15, at 3:30 PM, with the official start at 4:00 PM from Via Luigi Rizzo through the city center to the seafront, repeating on Tuesday, February 17. The floats, created by over twenty groups including parishes (Sacro Cuore and Trasfigurazione), associations, schools, dance academies, and cultural groups, were inspired by Ulysses, the Punic Wars, the legend of Colapesce, and the maritime vocation of Milazzo. The days were enlivened by the music of DJ Francesco Saia with the participation of Carmelo Impalà .
Milazzo can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Milazzo exit. The Milazzo train station is served by the Tyrrhenian line; from the station, the center is accessible by bus or taxi. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
The parades travel through the historic center, starting from Via Luigi Rizzo and continuing to the seafront and Piazza della Repubblica. The Carnival village is set up in central city areas (in recent editions, the former Ritrovo Diana area).
Access to the parades and the village is free. We recommend arriving early on parade days to secure a spot along the route and to be aware of temporary traffic changes in the city center.
