The feast of Milazzo's patron saint, blending faith, tradition, and major concerts along the Lungomare Garibaldi
The Patronal Feast of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr is the most important religious and civil event of the year for Milazzo, a town in the province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Every year, around the first Sunday of September, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a festival that weaves together deep popular devotion, centuries-old traditions, and a grand spectacle open to all.
Saint Stephen, the first martyr of Christianity, has been venerated in Milazzo for centuries. Tradition links the cult to the discovery of some of the Saint's relics and his subsequent recognition as the protector of the city, alongside the ancient devotion to Saint Papino. The spiritual heart of the festival is the statue of the Saint, kept and carried in procession amidst the joyful cries of the locals: "Evviva 'o Santu!" (Long live the Saint!).
The highlight of the festivities is the solemn procession, which in recent years has been held over two days. The religious parade winds through the main streets of the historic center to lead the statue to the Old Cathedral, located within the evocative fortified citadel of the Castle of Milazzo, one of the most impressive monumental complexes in Sicily. The ascent to the Castle, accompanied by the faithful and confraternities, offers one of the most moving scenes of the entire festival, set against panoramic views of the gulf and fervent religious spirit.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the festival has always offered a packed program of free shows and concerts set up on the Lungomare Garibaldi, in the space in front of the Ferris wheel. Over the years, the Milazzo stage has hosted some of the most beloved names in Italian music, turning the seafront into a grand venue for popular celebration. The events, promoted by the Municipality of Milazzo together with the Parish of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, are free to attend and attract thousands of people from across the province of Messina.
For four days, Milazzo changes its face: the historic center and the marina fill with stalls, lights, traditional sweets, and festive crowds. The Municipality implements traffic changes and a shuttle service connecting Piazza XXV Aprile to the Castle to facilitate access for the faithful attending religious services at the Old Cathedral and for the public heading to the shows on the seafront. The Feast of Saint Stephen thus remains, year after year, the occasion where Milazzo reaffirms its most authentic identity, amidst faith, the sea, and Sicilian tradition.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr returns to Milazzo (ME) from September 4 to 7, 2026. Opening the festivities on Friday, September 4, is a free concert by Ermal Meta on the Lungomare Garibaldi, in the space in front of the Ferris wheel: the setlist will feature his most beloved songs alongside his most recent productions. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Milazzo together with Puntoeacapo Srl and Arts Promotion, with free admission.
The religious heart of the festival is entrusted to the processions of the saint's statue: on Saturday, September 6, after the Eucharistic celebration in the Church of San Giacomo, the parade will accompany the Saint towards the Old Cathedral in the Castle of Milazzo; on Sunday, September 7, the second procession will cross the historic center. A shuttle service from Piazza XXV Aprile to the Castle will be active during the festival days.
The complete program of shows and religious events is defined by the Municipality of Milazzo and the Parish of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr.
