About Sand Nativity

Every winter, the historic center of Scorrano, in the heart of Salento, transforms into an open-air museum thanks to the Sand Nativity, one of the three major sand-sculpted Nativity scenes in Italy, alongside those in Jesolo and Vatican City. Within the evocative Cloister of the former Augustinian Convent, internationally renowned sculptors mold over a thousand quintals of sand into monumental works that depict the Nativity while reflecting on Apulian history and landscapes. A Christmas event that blends art, spirituality, and popular tradition.

A Nativity scene sculpted in sand in the heart of Salento

The Scorrano Sand Nativity, also known by its international name Sand Nativity, is one of the most original and admired Christmas events in Puglia. Every year, during the holiday season, the small town of Scorrano in the province of Lecce welcomes thousands of visitors drawn by an ephemeral and monumental work of art: a Nativity scene entirely modeled in sand by world-famous sculptors. It is one of only three sand Nativity scenes created in Italy, along with those in Jesolo and Vatican City, a distinction that has made Scorrano an essential stop for Christmas tourism in Salento.

The venue: The Cloister of the Augustinians

The installation finds its ideal setting in the Cloister of the former Augustinian Convent, a splendid 16th-century complex, and in the adjacent ancient courtyard of Palazzo De Iaco-Veris. In these spaces steeped in history, the sculptures come to life using over a thousand quintals of sand, totaling dozens of cubic meters: record-breaking figures that testify to the monumental scale of the works, which stand several meters high and are hand-carved over weeks of labor.

International artists and sculptural mastery

What makes the Sand Nativity unique is the presence of master sculptors from all over the world, including Europe and North America. With patience and refined technique, these artists transform simple compacted sand into figures with surprising details, reinterpreting classic Nativity themes and enriching them with elements of the Salento region, its history, and its identity.

Origins and the bond with Scorrano

The event was born in 2018 from an intuition by Bruno Giannotta, a Scorrano native who returned to Salento after years spent in Canada, where he had presided over the Sand Sculpture Society. His idea, embraced by the Promuovi Scorrano association and supported by the Municipality, quickly established itself as one of the key Christmas events in all of Puglia. Scorrano, after all, is already world-famous for its extraordinary light displays, so much so that it is considered the capital of lights: the Sand Nativity completes and enriches its winter cultural offering.

An experience for the whole family

The visit, which lasts on average between fifteen and thirty minutes, is suitable for all ages and represents a deeply evocative moment, especially for children. Around the Nativity, the historic center of Scorrano comes alive with artistic illuminations, Christmas markets, a large Christmas tree, and numerous initiatives that turn the village into an authentic Christmas village in the heart of Salento.

Sand Nativity — edition 2026

The dates for the 2026 edition of the Scorrano Sand Nativity have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to return during the Christmas period, starting from the first days of December 2026 until Epiphany, held within the Cloister of the former Augustinian Convent. The theme and artists for the new edition will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the inauguration.

The Scorrano Sand Nativity is traditionally a Christmas season event, hosted in the Cloister of the former Augustinian Convent. As of now, the organizers of the Promuovi Scorrano association have not yet released the official dates, theme, or program for the 2026 edition. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
