The Carnival of the Madonie village, featuring music and community celebrations
The Sclafani Bagni Carnival is the annual February festival that brings color and joy to the streets of this small village, perched at an altitude of over 800 meters in the Madonie region, near Palermo. In a town of only a few hundred residents, the Carnival serves primarily as a community celebration: an opportunity to gather, share music, dance, and enjoy convivial moments in the heart of the Sicilian winter, before the Lenten season begins.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Sclafani Bagni and features various activities throughout the Carnival period. Alongside entertainment evenings and musical performances, the program includes community gatherings designed to involve both young and old in the squares and streets of the medieval historic center, which is dominated by the castle tower and the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Sclafani Bagni is one of the most charming villages in the Madonie area, famous since ancient times for its thermal waters and its medieval urban layout, linked to the noble Sclafani family who strengthened its fortifications and walls in the 14th century. The Carnival is part of a calendar of traditions that includes the Holy Week and the deeply felt patronal feast of the Ecce Homo in June.
Far from the large-scale Sicilian carnivals like those in Sciacca or Acireale, the Sclafani Bagni Carnival retains an intimate and genuine feel, defined by spontaneous participation, costumes, music, and conviviality. It is an event that tells the story of the identity of a small town in inland Sicily, keeping the Carnival tradition alive through the dedication of its residents and the municipal administration.
The Municipality of Sclafani Bagni confirmed two events dedicated to the Carnival for the 2026 edition: February 7, 2026, with a musical event, and February 12, 2026, with a community gathering in the historic center of the Madonie village. The festival, with its intimate and popular character, enlivened the village streets with music and moments of conviviality, upholding the Carnival tradition of this small town in the province of Palermo.
Sclafani Bagni can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (take the Tremonzelli or Scillato exit) and continuing along the provincial roads of the Madonie. The village is about an hour and a half from Palermo. It is not directly served by train: the nearest station is on the Palermo-Agrigento line, from which you must continue by car.
For the updated event program, it is advisable to check the Municipality of Sclafani Bagni website or contact the municipal offices at +39 0921 541097.
As it is a mountain village, temperatures in February can be quite cold: warm clothing is recommended. The historic center is perfect for exploring on foot, among narrow alleys, panoramic views of the Madonie, and medieval monuments.
