About Scarperia Piano Competition

Every spring, the charming Palazzo dei Vicari in Scarperia e San Piero, nestled in the heart of the Mugello, hosts the Scarperia Piano Competition. This event attracts young piano talents from across Italy and abroad. Soloists, students from music-focused schools, and piano duos compete before a high-level jury in a showcase that blends musical passion, regional promotion, and a unique atmosphere steeped in history and beauty.

A piano competition in the heart of the Mugello

The Scarperia Piano Competition is one of the most appreciated musical events in the Mugello, the hilly area north of Florence. It takes place in the municipality of Scarperia e San Piero (Metropolitan City of Florence, Tuscany), within the historic halls of the renowned Palazzo dei Vicari, one of the region's most iconic medieval buildings. Every year, the competition draws numerous young musicians, accompanied by their families and teachers, who travel from various Italian regions and abroad to perform and put their talent to the test.

The venue: Palazzo dei Vicari

Auditions and performances are held in the halls of the Palazzo dei Vicari, particularly in the Salone dei Tendaggi (Hall of Curtains). As the historical heart of Scarperia—an ancient Florentine outpost along the road crossing the Apennines—the palace offers a captivating setting. Playing the piano within its frescoed walls, decorated with the coats of arms of the vicars, is an experience that leaves a lasting impression on both contestants and the audience. Performances are open to the public and free of charge, allowing everyone to witness the talent of the new generation of pianists.

Sections and categories

The competition is divided into several sections, designed to accommodate musicians of all levels and ages, from children to professionals:

  • Soloists: open to students from music schools, middle schools with musical curricula, music high schools, conservatories, and academies, divided by age group.
  • Music-focused schools: dedicated to educational institutions with musical programs.
  • Piano four-hands: for piano duos.

Auditions are public, and playing from memory is not required—a choice that helps even the youngest contestants feel at ease.

Jury and direction

The competition is directed by Maestro Silvia Carletti, while the jury has been chaired by prominent musicians on the national scene, including Maestro Giovanni Nesi, head of the piano department at the "Pietro Mascagni" Conservatory in Livorno. The commission evaluates technique, musicality, and interpretation, with a keen eye on the educational growth of the young contestants.

A local event

Organized by the Pro Loco Scarperia APS, the competition represents a valuable appointment not only musically but also culturally and for tourism in the municipality of Scarperia e San Piero. The initiative, supported by the local administration, contributes to promoting the Mugello region and brings dozens of families and enthusiasts to Scarperia during the event. The highlight is the final concert, where the absolute winners of the various categories perform before the public, followed by the awards ceremony.
