Swimming, cycling, and running along the seafront of the 'Pearl of the Tyrrhenian'
The Santa Marinella Sprint Triathlon is a celebration of the triple discipline on the northern coast of the province of Rome. For an entire morning, the seaside town—known as the 'Pearl of the Tyrrhenian'—transforms into an open-air competition field: athletes swim in the waters in front of the seaside promenade, cycle on a traffic-free city circuit, and run along the coast, with the start and finish lines set on the seafront in front of the spectators.
The race is held over the classic sprint distance: 750 meters of swimming in the sea, 20 kilometers of road cycling, and 5 kilometers of running, for a total of 25.75 kilometers. It is a fast and spectacular format, suitable for both competitive athletes chasing a personal best and those tackling their first-ever triathlon. The event is classified as Silver in the Italian Triathlon Federation (FITRI) calendar and is open to registered athletes, from Youth and Junior categories up to Masters.
The Santa Marinella triathlon is a historic fixture in the Lazio regional calendar: the twelfth edition, held in October 2019, brought over 260 triathletes from across Central Italy to the coast, coinciding with the town's 70th anniversary. After a few years of interruption, the race returned in 2026 with a new spring date and a new identity: the Fabio Ballarini Memorial, held for the first time on Sunday, April 12, 2026, as the fourth stage of the FITRI Lazio Regional Championship, also serving as a qualifying event for the Tuscany Cup.
The event headquarters is the Passeggiata al mare, the social hub of Santa Marinella: this is where the transition zone, start, and finish lines are located, while the race office and registration are hosted at the Municipal Library on Via della Libertà . The swimming leg takes place in the waters in front of the town center; the cycling circuit winds through the town streets along the Via Aurelia, which is closed to traffic for the occasion; the running leg unfolds along the seafront, surrounded by cheering crowds.
The event is organized by the Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Guida Sicura (ASGS Italia), one of the most active organizations in the Lazio triathlon scene, in collaboration with the local club Purosangue Triathlon and with the patronage of the Lazio Region, the Municipality of Santa Marinella, and CONI Lazio. Official timing is provided by Next Race.
Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea halfway between Civitavecchia and Ladispoli, Santa Marinella is one of the most beloved seaside resorts in Lazio: the Odescalchi Castle by the small harbor, the Art Nouveau villas, and the long tradition of Roman summer vacations make it an ideal destination to combine a sporting trip with a day at the beach. The triathlon is the perfect opportunity to discover the town in its most vibrant state, when the entire city—from the station to the port—cheers for the athletes.
After a few years of interruption, on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the Santa Marinella Sprint Triathlon returned to animate the seafront of the 'Pearl of the Tyrrhenian'. The comeback edition, organized by ASD Guida Sicura in collaboration with Purosangue Triathlon and with the patronage of the Lazio Region, the Municipality of Santa Marinella, and CONI Lazio, was dedicated to the memory of Fabio Ballarini: an inaugural Memorial that attracted about 200 athletes from Lazio and neighboring regions.
The start took place at 10:00 AM from the Passeggiata al mare, with the city 'locked down' for the occasion: 750 meters of swimming in the waters in front of the center, 20 kilometers of cycling on a traffic-free city circuit, and 5 kilometers of running along the seafront. The Silver-classified event was the fourth stage of the FITRI Lazio Regional Championship and also awarded points for the Tuscany Cup.
In the men's race, Matteo Carlo Perri (K3 Cremona) won in 1h01'50", ahead of Luca Picano (Roma Triathlon) and Leonardo De Santis (A.S. Minerva Roma). In the women's race, victory went to Maria Casciotti (Purosangue ASD) in 1h09'33", ahead of Sara Balletta (A.S. Minerva Roma) and Francesca Nardone (Purosangue ASD). It was a great celebration for local teams as well, with the Promenade packed with spectators until the awards ceremony.

By train: Santa Marinella is served by the FL5 regional line (Rome Termini–Civitavecchia); the station is just a few minutes' walk from the seafront and the race area. By car: Take the A12 Rome–Civitavecchia motorway, exit at Santa Marinella, or use the Via Aurelia (SS1). On the morning of the race, the town center and the seafront are closed to traffic: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the outer areas.
Participation is reserved for FITRI-registered athletes, with online registration via the Next Race circuit by the deadlines indicated by the organizers. Spectating along the course and on the Passeggiata al mare is free and open to the public.
