The neighborhood festival of Tor Sapienza, blending faith, music, and local community spirit

The Santa Maria Immacolata and San Vincenzo de Paoli Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year in Tor Sapienza, a neighborhood in the eastern zone of Rome, located in Municipio V, in the province of Rome and the Lazio region. Organized by the parish of the same name on Via di Tor Sapienza 52, the festival is traditionally held around the last Sunday of May and spans several days, weaving together religious and popular elements into a single calendar shared by the entire district.
Tor Sapienza was established in the early 20th century as a working-class cooperative settlement, far from the historic center, growing around work, solidarity, and the parish. This origin is still felt today during the festival: it is not an event designed for tourism, but a celebration of identity, where families who have lived here for three generations meet in the same streets. The parish, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Vincent de Paul—the French saint of charity and patron of social works—has always been the social reference point of the neighborhood and the driving force behind the festival.
The spiritual heart of the festivities remains the Solemn Mass and, above all, the procession, which on the final day winds through the streets of the neighborhood accompanied by a brass band and the faithful. The passage of the statue in front of homes, the decorated balconies, and the stops at symbolic points in the district are gestures repeated for decades, representing the most attended moment of the entire week. At the end, the traditional fireworks display closes the festival, lighting up the sky of the Roman suburbs.
Alongside the liturgical part, the secular program is rich and intentionally popular. Recent editions have featured:
There is also a charitable aspect, perhaps the most consistent with the dedication to Saint Vincent de Paul: the charity market, collections for the parish's charitable activities, blood drives, and the final raffle, the proceeds of which support neighborhood projects.
As in every Roman neighborhood festival, food plays a central role. The food stalls set up in the parish spaces offer homemade Roman cuisine, sandwiches, fried snacks, desserts, and beer, in an urban festival atmosphere that lasts until the evening. It is the moment when the festival truly becomes a space for intergenerational meeting, with shared tables and children running between the stalls.
Visitors to Rome rarely make it to Tor Sapienza, and for this very reason, the patronal feast offers an authentic glimpse of a city that is not just monuments: the Rome of neighborhoods, parishes, and local associations. For those living in the eastern part of the capital—from Prenestino to Collatino, from Ponte di Nona to La Rustica—it is a fixed appointment at the end of May, free and open to everyone.
In 2026, the community of Tor Sapienza, in Rome's Municipio V, once again celebrated its patronal feast dedicated to Santa Maria Immacolata and San Vincenzo de' Paoli, held as always in the latter part of May. The structure of the festival remains the one consolidated over the years: days of parish appointments, moments of prayer, initiatives for families and youth, and the conclusion marked by the procession through the district streets.
Information regarding the 2026 dates comes from city event calendars; the specific program, including times and guests, was communicated through parish channels and posters displayed in the neighborhood.
Parrocchia Santa Maria Immacolata e San Vincenzo de' Paoli, Via di Tor Sapienza 52, 00155 Rome (Municipio V). Events take place in the church, on the square, and in the parish spaces, while the procession travels through the neighborhood streets.
Access to the festival and shows is free. Only food stall purchases, raffle tickets, and any charitable initiatives require payment.
The final evening, featuring the procession and fireworks, is the most crowded: it is advisable to arrive early. The full program is usually released a few weeks in advance via the parish and its Facebook page.
