Santa Maria Assunta Festival (Borgo Pineto)

A village festival at the gates of Rome

Every year, on the first weekend of September, Borgo Pineto—a hamlet in the municipality of Sacrofano, within the Metropolitan City of Rome—becomes the beating heart of local life. The Santa Maria Assunta Festival is the hamlet's most anticipated event: three days of faith, culture, and entertainment that draw families and visitors from across the area north of Rome, between the Via Cassia, Via Flaminia, and the Veio Park. It is organized by the Borgo Pineto Festival Committee, in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Sacrofano and with the patronage of the municipality.

Faith and tradition

The religious core of the festival is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, the patron saint of the Sacrofano parish. The liturgical program includes a Mass for families, the solemn Saturday Mass followed by a procession through the village streets, and Sunday morning services. Over the years, the festival has hosted prominent celebrants: in 2023 and 2025, the solemn Mass was officiated by H.E. Monsignor Marco Salvi, Bishop of Civita Castellana.

Open-air dancing and music

Every evening from 9:00 PM, the square of Borgo Pineto comes alive with live music and dancing. Orchestras and bands specializing in ballroom and folk music take turns on stage, creating a festive atmosphere that brings all generations together. The 2025 edition featured performances by Roberta Pavia with Note Improvvisate, I Due Note with Agrodolce, and the Bandana Band, among others.

Food stalls

The food stalls open at 8:00 PM and serve as the festival's main social hub. Porchetta sandwiches, grilled sausages, French fries, fried pizza, desserts, and artisanal gelato showcase the authentic flavors of the Roman countryside. Dining at the stalls, followed by dancing in the square, is the nightly ritual that defines all three days.

Neighborhood games and children's entertainment

The afternoons are dedicated to the community: neighborhood games and traditional folk contests foster friendly competition among the local districts, while activities for children, workshops, and the charming Sunday morning Pet Show make the festival a family-friendly event. Card tournaments, such as the traditional briscola competition with awards presented on the opening night, are also a staple.

The grand finale

The festival concludes on Sunday evening in spectacular fashion: after the final dance session, the highly anticipated lottery prize draw takes place around 11:00 PM, followed by a fireworks display that lights up the sky over Borgo Pineto, bidding farewell to the community until the following year.

A community heritage in Lazio

Like many patronal festivals in Lazio, the Borgo Pineto celebration is much more than just a food fair: it is a moment of identity where the community gathers around its roots. This is reflected in the mural inaugurated during the 2023 edition, created by artist Giuliana Stramacci and painted together with the children and youth of the village: a pair of hands and a dove, symbols of strength and peace, now proudly guarded by the community.
