The patronal feast of Campotosto: a blend of faith, traditional firecrackers, and folk songs
The Santa Maria Apparente Patronal Feast is the most cherished event in Campotosto, a small town in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Nestled at an altitude of over 1,300 meters on the shores of the large artificial lake of the same name, within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, the community gathers every July 2nd to honor its patron saint in a celebration that blends religious devotion with ancient folk traditions. A second feast dedicated to the Virgin is also held on the first Sunday of August.
According to local tradition, on July 2, 1604, the Virgin Mary appeared to Rosa Angelica Palombi, a girl who had been mute since birth, while she was washing clothes at the Rio Fucino stream. The Virgin asked her to return to the village and tell her uncle, the local parish priest, that she wished for a church to be built at the spot she indicated, marking its outline in the snow. The girl returned to the village and, to everyone's astonishment, regained her speech to recount what she had been asked. The site soon became a place of pilgrimage, leading to the construction of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Apparente, which still preserves the memory of the miracle today.
The Church of Santa Maria Apparente stands just outside the village center, near the cemetery. Its facade features a circular rose window, a central portal topped by the Orsini family crest, and small square openings. The single-nave interior houses 17th-century paintings depicting the Virgin's apparition to the young girl and the beheading of Saint John the Baptist. From the presbytery, one can descend into the evocative crypt, where once-frescoed vaults still show traces of the miracle and a depiction of Saint Cecilia at the organ. The crypt is only open to visitors during the July 2nd feast.
The heart of the feast is the procession that winds through the entire village in honor of the patron saint. The parade is accompanied by the characteristic sound of 'mortaletti' firecrackers and traditional songs sung by the village women, marking the Virgin's passage through the streets. Although the church remains closed following the seismic events that struck the region, the community continues to renew this appointment every year, a living testament to their deep bond with the land and their determination to keep the village alive.
Set in one of the most fascinating landscapes of the Abruzzo mountains, the feast is also the perfect opportunity to discover Campotosto, famous for its lake, local delicacies like mortadella di Campotosto, and the pristine nature of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
