The festival of the votive floats in the Auricarro district of Palo del Colle
The Santa Croce Festival is one of the most deeply rooted events in the calendar of Palo del Colle, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in Apulia. Every year, in early May, the rural Auricarro district becomes the beating heart of a celebration that blends religious devotion, folk traditions, and village conviviality around the figure of the Holy Crucifix, the town's patron saint.
The tradition is rooted in a centuries-old legend: a farmer, while plowing parched lands near Auricarro during a drought, discovered a crucifix; at the moment of the find, abundant rain returned to soak the fields. The miracle sparked a dispute between neighboring towns, until two oxen, left free to choose the path, headed toward Palo del Colle: since then, the Crucifix has been venerated as the community's protector.
The most spectacular symbol of the festival are the votive floats—the typical "Santa Croce floats"—decorated with religious-themed scenes and crafted with handmade paper roses and crosses using ancient techniques. Pulled by horses and tractors and supported by local businesses, they parade through the city streets accompanied by flag-wavers, costumed groups, and marching bands, before reaching the Auricarro park.
The festival unfolds through both religious and secular moments: the evening parade of the floats and the convivial gathering for 'u panin c la salzizz d' Sanda Crausc' in Piazza Lenoci, Holy Masses in the Church of the Holy Crucifix, the procession of the Crucifix with the "au Casiadd d Crist" blessing, and the distribution of blessed panelle. In the afternoon, there is space for "Art and vintage games," traditional dances, and, in the evening, concerts and DJ sets.
Surrounding the religious dimension, one can breathe the atmosphere of great village festivals: families gathering in the park for outdoor picnics, rides and attractions for children, pony rides, stalls selling local products, and traditional dishes based on fava beans and seasonal vegetables. The Pro Loco enlivens the district with demonstrations of ancient crafts and the making of paper roses, the quintessential symbol of the celebration.
The Santa Croce Festival is an authentic opportunity to discover the most genuine soul of Palo del Colle and the Bari hinterland: a blend of rituals, flavors, and collective memory that every spring draws back both residents and returning emigrants, in one of the most well-attended events in the region.
The 2026 Santa Croce Festival took place on May 2 and 3 in the Auricarro district of Palo del Colle, confirming itself as one of the most anticipated and well-attended events of the year. The edition, inspired by the theme "The beauty and care of creation" following in the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi, saw the parade of 19 votive floats decorated with handmade paper roses and crosses.
On Saturday, the festival came alive with the parade of floats and the convivial gathering for 'u panin c la salzizz' in Piazza Lenoci, followed by music and entertainment. On Sunday, between Holy Masses, the procession of the Crucifix, and the distribution of blessed panelle, the Auricarro park transformed into a large festive space: outdoor picnics, games for children, pony rides, folk dances with maestro Gianni Labate, the Radicanto concert, and the final DJ set by Radio Rec.
