About Santa Claus Village

Every December, the historic center of Sant'Angelo d'Alife, in the province of Caserta, transforms into the Santa Claus Village. For two days, the village alleys come alive with markets, handicrafts, street food, and roving performances. Santa's house welcomes children with elves and letter-writing stations, while street artists, bagpipers, jugglers, and living statues animate the squares. This event, established in 2023, is organized by the Youth Forum and local Pro Loco associations under the patronage of the Municipality.

Christmas in the Matese village

For one weekend in December, Sant'Angelo d'Alife, a small town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the province of Caserta, Campania, shakes off its winter quiet to become the Santa Claus Village. This is not a purpose-built theme park, but a village-wide celebration: the streets and alleys of the historic center, adorned with lights and decorations, provide a natural backdrop for an event that has quickly become the most anticipated Christmas gathering in this corner of the Matese mountains.

A village-wide event in the historic center

The heart of the event is the space in front of the Church of Santa Maria della Valle, where the stalls are concentrated, opening in the early afternoon and remaining lively until evening. From there, the event spreads through the narrow streets of the village, engaging corners, portals, and small squares that usually remain silent in winter. It is a format that highlights the town's urban fabric, inviting visitors to walk, discover one alley after another, and be surprised by the festive displays.

What to find in the village

  • Santa's House, where children can meet Santa Claus and his elves to deliver their letters.
  • Street performers animating the streets: bagpipers, jugglers, fire-eaters, fortune tellers, living statues, and magic shows.
  • Live music, featuring Christmas repertoires and traditional sounds.
  • Markets with hobbyists, creative artisans, local producers, and regional merchants.
  • Street food and tastings of festive specialties and sweets.
  • Games and activities for children, such as the Grinch treasure hunt.

The Murganatiello, a corner of popular theater

One of the most characteristic areas of the route is the Murganatiello alley, curated by the Murganati group. Over the years, this spot has hosted the event's most theatrical offerings: from the Cantata dei Pastori, featuring a Neapolitan-style living nativity scene led by the Pulcinella mask amidst 18th-century pastoral songs and sounds, to an original Victorian-style Christmas display with live music and costumed performers. It is the moment when the festival transcends a simple market to become a true historical re-enactment.

Flavors and crafts of the Matese

As with any Christmas market in the Campanian hinterland, gastronomy takes center stage. Local producers bring regional specialties to the square—cheeses, cured meats, preserves, and traditional festive sweets—alongside street food offerings. Alongside the food, there is space for the creations of artisans and hobbyists, with handmade items, decorations, and gift ideas that showcase local craftsmanship.

Who organizes it

The event was born in 2023 and is promoted by the Youth Forum of Sant'Angelo d'Alife together with the Pro Loco Archangelus and the Pro Loco Santangiolese, with the patronage of the Municipal Administration. It is the result of volunteer work that unites different generations of the town, with the stated goal of bringing life and visitors back to the historic center during the holiday season.

Sant'Angelo d'Alife, between Matese and Volturno

The town sits at an altitude of about 385 meters on the slopes of the Matese massif, in the Alto Casertano area, a short distance from Alife, Piedimonte Matese, and the Volturno river. Beyond the Christmas village, visitors can take the opportunity to discover the town's heritage, starting with the Chapel of Sant'Antuono, with its 15th-century frescoes, which is open for guided tours during the event. A great reason to turn an afternoon at the market into a full day exploring the hinterland of Campania.
