The winter feast of the patron saint of Botrugno, blending faith, memory, and Salento tradition
In Botrugno, a village in lower Salento in the Province of Lecce, Saint Oronzo is celebrated twice a year: on February 20th with the Little Festival (or Patronage Feast) and on August 26th with the major summer patronal feast. The winter recurrence, which the locals affectionately call "Santu Ronzu piccinnu" or "la capu te Santu Ronzu", is more intimate but no less heartfelt: it is a moment when the community gathers around its protector in the heart of the Salento winter.
The February 20th festival is no coincidence. It commemorates the earthquake that struck the entire Terra d'Otranto on February 20, 1743: tradition attributes the protection of the population to Saint Oronzo, and since then, the town has renewed its thanks to the saint every year. It is a celebration that weaves together faith, local history, and community identity, all typical traits of Puglian patronal feasts.
The most characteristic element is the procession: the entire statue of the saint is not carried through the streets, but only the papier-mâché head, in memory of the martyrdom of Oronzo, who was traditionally beheaded alongside his companions near Lecce. Hence the popular name "la capu te Santu Ronzu". The procession departs from the Mother Church and winds through the historic center, accompanied by the parish community.
Alongside the religious aspect, there is a beloved popular ritual: the macinula di Sant'Oronzo. This is a wooden wheel displayed in the square, decorated with local Salento produce offered by the community — tomatoes, pomegranates, peppers, wine, oil, cheeses — and accompanied by a raffle for a piglet. The lottery tickets fuel a tradition of sharing and solidarity that has accompanied the festival for generations.
Botrugno is part of the network of Oronzian Cities, an association of Puglian municipalities linked to the cult of Saint Oronzo, which periodically gather for joint initiatives. In recent years, the Little Festival has also become an opportunity for institutional and cultural meetings between these towns in Salento and Puglia, with events held at the town's Palazzo Marchesale.
Experiencing the Little Festival means discovering the authentic soul of a small town in southern Puglia, far from the main tourist circuits: a day of devotion, popular traditions, and Salento hospitality.
In 2026, the Sant'Oronzo Little Festival in Botrugno took on particular significance, becoming a meeting point for the network of Puglian Oronzian Cities. The day of February 20th combined the institutional appointment at the Palazzo Marchesale, the liturgical moment in the Mother Church, and the historic popular procession, confirming the vitality of a tradition that the small town in the Province of Lecce guards with pride.
