The Sant'Oronzo Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Muro Leccese, a small village in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento and Puglia. Every year, in the final days of August, the town celebrates its patron saint with festivities that combine religious observance with popular tradition, drawing locals, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.
Sant'Oronzo, the first bishop of Lecce and a martyr, is venerated throughout Salento as a protector against calamities and epidemics. His cult is particularly deep-rooted in a group of Salento municipalities—including Lecce, Maglie, Botrugno, Campi Salentina, and Muro Leccese itself—which in 2020 joined the Città Oronziane association to promote the figure and traditions associated with the saint. The day of his martyrdom, August 26th, is the heart of the celebrations.
The most solemn moment of the festival is the procession of the statue of Sant'Oronzo, which winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the clergy, civil authorities, and a long procession of the faithful. Popular devotion intertwines with the sounds of the brass band and the atmosphere created by the artistic light displays, the typical architectural light structures that illuminate the squares and streets of this Salento village.
Alongside religious rites, the secular program enlivens the evenings with live concerts, folk music performances, and nights of pizzica, the traditional dance of Salento. There is no shortage of market stalls and food stands featuring typical Salento dishes, craft markets, and the traditional fireworks display that brings the festivities to a spectacular close. It is an ideal opportunity to discover one of the most authentic villages in the Salento hinterland, among Lecce stone alleys and historic courtyards.
Muro Leccese is more than just its patronal festival: the town preserves a rich historical and archaeological heritage and is strategically located for exploring lower Salento, a short distance from Otranto, Maglie, and the Adriatic coast. The Sant'Oronzo Festival is the best time to experience its most genuine soul, when the entire community gathers in the streets in a shared festive atmosphere.
The 2026 Sant'Oronzo Festival will return to enliven the historic center of Muro Leccese, in the province of Lecce, during the usual late-August window. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced, and the detailed program will be published by the Patronal Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the event.
As every year, the solemn procession of the statue of Sant'Oronzo, the light displays in the historic center, brass band and folk music concerts, pizzica evenings, food stands, and the traditional closing fireworks display are expected. It is recommended to check for updates on the official municipal and Festival Committee channels.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Muro Leccese (LE), in Puglia, throughout the squares and streets of the town. Admission to all events is free.
By car: Muro Leccese can be reached via the SS16 state road and the Lecce-Maglie-Otranto expressway, taking the Maglie exit. By train: Maglie station, on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line, is just a few kilometers away; from Lecce, you can continue by bus or car. Nearest airport: Brindisi (approx. 70 km).
The festival is traditionally held in the final days of August, around August 26th, the feast day of Sant'Oronzo. It is recommended to check the updated dates and program on the municipal and Festival Committee channels before traveling.
