Two days of local food, amateur talent, and processions in the heart of Alta Irpinia
Perched at an altitude of 660 meters overlooking the Ofanto Valley, the Municipality of Teora is one of the most charming villages in Alta Irpinia, in the Province of Avellino, deep within the Campania region. Every year around July 23rd, the town celebrates the feast in honor of Sant'Emidio: two days that alternate between religious and secular programs, serving as a cornerstone of the local calendar. It is a festival where the town reconnects, with families returning home for the occasion and squares buzzing with life until late at night.
The highlight of the evening on July 22nd is the Corrida Teorese, an 'anything goes' talent show modeled after Italy's most popular television format. Locals of all ages take the stage with impressions, songs, sketches, and quirky performances, judged by the audience with applause and rattles. It is a simple format that has worked in Teora for years because it puts the town on stage for the town, featuring comedy rooted in dialect, local references, and affectionate self-irony. Visitors get an immediate, authentic glimpse into the heart of the Teora community.
Running alongside the talent show on the same evening and in the same space is the Sant'Emidio Food Festival. Stalls set up by the organizers offer traditional Irpinian dishes and products, served at open-air tables while the show continues. It follows the classic formula of internal Irpinian festivals, where home cooking, local wine, and entertainment go hand in hand: you eat while watching the stage and stay in the square until late.
The day of Sant'Emidio centers on the Mother Church of San Nicola di Mira, Teora's main place of worship, which has been destroyed and rebuilt several times by earthquakes throughout history, from 1604 to the 1980 quake. After Holy Mass, the statue of the saint is carried through the town in a procession, accompanied by the faithful along the streets of the rebuilt village. This is no minor detail: Sant'Emidio is traditionally invoked as a protector against earthquakes. In Teora—one of the towns closest to the epicenter of the November 23, 1980, Irpinia earthquake, later awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit for its dignity during reconstruction—this devotion carries a particularly deep significance.
The patronal feast of Sant'Emidio does not stand alone; it is part of the "Teora R...Estate" summer calendar, promoted by the Municipality of Teora in collaboration with local associations and published annually on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino. From June to August, the town hosts cultural events, concerts, food festivals, sports tournaments, youth initiatives, and charity events. In the 2026 edition, for instance, the Sant'Emidio festival is preceded by the Wine & Taranta Fest in mid-July and followed by major Ferragosto events. Those planning a stay in Alta Irpinia can easily build a long weekend around these festivities.
Those arriving in Teora for Sant'Emidio will not find a massive tourist attraction, but an authentic village festival: open-air squares, chairs filled early, children running about, and the band and orchestra playing until nightfall. It is the best way to understand how summer is experienced in the villages of Irpinia, just a short distance from the landscapes of the Ofanto and the inland areas of Campania far from mass tourism routes.
In the "Teora R...Estate 2026" calendar—the summer festival of the Municipality of Teora also published on the Sistema Irpinia portal—the feast in honor of Sant'Emidio occupied July 22nd and 23rd, confirming the format consolidated over the years.
The first evening was dedicated to the traditional Food Festival & Talent Show, starting at 8:30 PM: the Sant'Emidio Food Festival with its stalls and, on the same stage, the Corrida Teorese, the amateur talent show that for years has drawn families and emigrants returning for the summer to the square.
On the day of Sant'Emidio, the religious program included Holy Mass at 6:00 PM in the Mother Church of San Nicola di Mira, followed by the procession through the streets of the center. The closing, at 9:00 PM, was entrusted to the live orchestra, with dancing and popular music until late at night.
The patronal feast was part of a particularly rich program: the Wine & Taranta Fest from July 10th to 12th, the charity treasure hunt on August 1st, and, for Ferragosto, the free concert by Fausto Leali at Largo Europa on August 14th, followed by fireworks. All events were held with free admission.

By car: Teora can be reached via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, taking the Lioni-Grottaminarda exit towards Alta Irpinia, then following the SS7 Ofantina road. The village is about 60 km from Avellino and 130 km from Naples. By train: the reference station is Lioni, on the Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line, with local bus connections to the town. For those arriving from outside the region, the most convenient stations are Avellino and Salerno, followed by bus or rental car.
The secular program (Food Festival & Talent Show, musical performances) takes place in the open-air areas of the town center, near Largo Europa, home to the Town Hall. The religious program is held in the Mother Church of San Nicola di Mira and along the streets of the historic center during the procession.
Admission to the shows is free. Only food and drinks at the festival stalls are for purchase, at the usual affordable prices typical of Irpinian festivals.
Evenings begin around 8:30 PM–9:00 PM; it is advisable to arrive early to find a seat at the tables. At an altitude of 660 meters, July nights can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. For accommodation, look for options in Alta Irpinia (Lioni, Caposele, Nusco, Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi), all just a few kilometers away.
