The patron saint festival of Arce

The Sant'Eleuterio Patronal Festival is the most cherished event of the year for Arce, a town in the Ciociaria region nestled in the hills of the Frosinone province, in southern Lazio. At the end of May, the entire town pauses to pay homage to its protector: two days where popular faith, tradition, markets, and entertainment merge into an event that draws locals, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.

Who was Sant'Eleuterio

According to tradition, Sant'Eleuterio was a Christian pilgrim of British origin who lived in the 5th century. Returning from the Holy Land, he arrived in Arce seeking hospitality. Legend says he was refused shelter, and the following morning his body was found guarded by dogs and surrounded by snakes—a miracle that prompted the community to elect him as their patron. Even today, the saint is invoked against the bites of venomous animals, and his devotion is deeply rooted in the identity of Arce.

The procession and religious celebration

The most solemn moment is the procession on May 29th, the day of his liturgical feast, when the statues of Sant'Eleuterio and Santa Rita are carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the town band and the faithful. The day is marked by Holy Masses in the parish church of Santi Apostoli Pietro e Paolo, in an atmosphere of reflection and celebration that unites entire families across generations.

Fair and performances in the square

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival thrives on a long-standing popular tradition. The annual fair is set up along the town's streets, with stalls offering local products, handicrafts, sweets, and goods that enliven Piazza Umberto I and the surrounding area. In the evening, the square transforms into a stage: concerts, music, and comedy shows entertain the public until late at night, amidst festive lights and food stands.

A community-organized event

The event is promoted by the Parish of Santi Apostoli Pietro e Paolo and organized by the Festivities Committee, with the patronage of the Municipality of Arce. It is the result of the voluntary work of many citizens who, every year, renew a collective ritual capable of telling the most authentic story of this corner of Ciociaria.
