The parade of allegorical floats in the heart of Val d'Agri
In Sant'Arcangelo, an important agricultural center in the Val d'Agri in the Province of Potenza, Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events. Every year, during the carnival season, the town fills with colors and joy with the traditional parade of allegorical floats, masked groups, and the unmistakable festive atmosphere that involves the entire community.
The procession starts from Piazza San Michele, the heart of the historic center, and winds through the town's streets accompanied by music, confetti, and masks. The celebration then continues with moments of conviviality — aperitifs, crepes, and typical Carnival sweets — in an atmosphere that brings together children, families, and groups of friends. It is one of those popular festivals where the entire town gathers in the streets to celebrate together.
The Carnival of Sant'Arcangelo is renewed each year with a different theme: for 2026, the edition is dedicated to the mask "Cup cup", a nod to the Lucanian popular and peasant culture. The event is organized by the local Pro Loco (Tourist Board), which keeps alive a tradition capable of blending fun, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
Sant'Arcangelo is not just Carnival: the village holds a rich historical heritage, from the Mother Church with its fifteenth-century baptismal font to the evocative Convent of Santa Maria d'Orsoleo, a few kilometers from the center. Experiencing Carnival here also means discovering an authentic territory, amidst olive groves, vineyards, and testimonies of an ancient history.
The 2026 Carnival of Sant'Arcangelo is dedicated to the 'Cup cup' mask and takes place during the carnival period in February. The highlight is the traditional parade of allegorical floats, which travels from Piazza San Michele through the historic center amidst masked groups, music, and confetti, followed by moments of conviviality with aperitifs and typical sweets.
