About Living Nativity Ferrandina

Every December, the Cloister of Purgatory in Ferrandina transforms into the Nativity scene with the living nativity: costumed figures, ancient crafts, and reconstructed workshops bring the atmosphere of Bethlehem of two thousand years ago back to life, in the heart of the Matera village.

The living nativity in the Cloister of Purgatory

The Living Nativity of Ferrandina is one of the most anticipated events of the Christmas season in the Matera village. The scene comes alive in the evocative Cloister of Purgatory, where costumed figures embody the Nativity and traditional characters: shepherds, artisans, and commoners engaged in ancient crafts.

A dive into the past

Among the stones of the cloister, workshops, scenes of daily life, and moments of the Holy Family are recreated, creating a path that immerses the visitor in the atmosphere of Palestine two thousand years ago. It is an experience that combines devotion, memory, and popular traditions, in which the community of Ferrandina tells its story through the gestures of the agricultural and artisanal work of the past.

A community tradition

Like many living nativities in Basilicata, the one in Ferrandina is also the result of the collective work of many people from the town, who prepare costumes, sets, and environments each year. The initiative is part of the Christmas calendar of the Municipality of Ferrandina, in the Province of Matera, and helps attract visitors from neighboring towns.

Living Nativity Ferrandina — edition 2026

In December 2026, the living nativity of Ferrandina returns to the Cloister of Purgatory, with costumed figures and ancient crafts recreating the Nativity scene. The precise dates will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding Christmas.
