The patronal feast of Castelnuovo di Porto, blending faith, historical re-enactments, and a medieval village celebration
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sant'Antonino Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Castelnuovo di Porto, a village in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, located in the heart of the Lazio Region, just a few kilometers from the capital along the Via Flaminia. Every year, in the first days of September and around the first Sunday of the month, the entire town gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious rites, historical memory, and popular festivities.
The patron saint celebrated is Saint Antoninus of Apamea, who has been venerated by the local community for centuries. The religious heart of the festival is the procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by confraternities and the participation of the faithful, with the statue of the saint carried through the stone houses and alleys of the village. Beyond the devotional aspect, the festival holds strong identity value: it is the occasion when residents, including those who have moved away, return to reunite.
Castelnuovo di Porto is one of the best-preserved villages in the area north of Rome, dominated by the Rocca Colonna, the fortress that watches over the town. During the festival, under the banner of the "medieval village in celebration", the squares and alleys host historical pageants, costumed re-enactments, performances, archery displays, and guided tours of the fortress. Art and craft exhibitions animate the historic buildings, while the village cellars open their doors to residents and visitors.
The secular side of the festival offers a rich program of shows and concerts in the square, featuring musical evenings, DJ sets, and nationally renowned artists who have filled the center of Castelnuovo di Porto over the years. The grand finale is traditionally entrusted to the fireworks display at midnight, which illuminates the sky above the fortress and concludes the celebrations in honor of the patron saint.
The culinary dimension is not to be missed: markets of local products, street food stands, tastings, and gourmet trails allow visitors to discover the flavors of the Lazio region, from the produce of the Roman countryside to local wines. Local associations and the Pro Loco collaborate with the Municipality of Castelnuovo di Porto to enliven every corner of the town.
For those visiting Lazio, the Sant'Antonino Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic village a short distance from Rome, far from the most crowded tourist circuits. Faith, history, music, and conviviality merge in a few days that tell the soul of a community tied to its roots.
The 2026 Sant'Antonino Festival in Castelnuovo di Porto will be held, according to tradition, in the first days of September, on the occasion of the patron saint's feast day. The calendar and detailed program will be released by the Municipality and the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event. As every year, the religious procession, the historical pageant in the medieval village, shows and concerts in the square, gourmet markets, and traditional fireworks are expected.
The official program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Traditionally, the following are planned: the procession in honor of Sant'Antonino, the historical pageant and re-enactments in the village, exhibitions and visits to the Rocca Colonna, musical evenings and concerts in the square, markets of local products and street food, and the final fireworks display. Please check the website of the Municipality of Castelnuovo di Porto for updates.
Castelnuovo di Porto is located about 30 km north of Rome, along the Via Flaminia. By car, it can be reached from the A1 motorway (Roma Nord/Fiano Romano exit) or via the Via Flaminia. By train, the nearest station is served by the FL3 regional line towards Viterbo, with connections to Rome; from the capital, regional Cotral bus lines are available.
Access to the historic center and events in the square is generally free. The detailed program is published every year on the website of the Municipality of Castelnuovo di Porto and on the Visit Castelnuovo di Porto tourist portal. During the festival, the historic center is pedestrianized: it is recommended to park in areas outside the village.
