Popular devotion to Saint Anne and an evening of performances in front of the Porta Piccola of the Real Bosco
The Sant'Anna Festival of Capodimonte is one of the most cherished summer events in the northern part of Naples. It takes place on Via Bosco di Capodimonte, right in front of the Porta Piccola, one of the historic entrances to the Real Bosco. For one evening, a stretch of the road transforms into a town square, with chairs set up along the sidewalks, an open-air stage, families coming down from their apartments, and local shopkeepers staying open late. It is not a massive festival, and that is precisely its charm: it is a neighborhood celebration for the San Carlo all'Arena district, which gathers once a year around its patron saint.
On July 26th, the Church celebrates Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary. In Naples, this occasion carries special weight, as Saint Anne is invoked as the protector of mothers, expectant women, and families. She is venerated in dozens of churches and neighborhoods, from the Paludi area to Barra and the hillside districts. In Capodimonte, this devotion is also guarded by the statue of Saint Anne kept in the church of Santa Maria della Misericordia, a landmark for local residents for generations. The festival on Via Bosco di Capodimonte was born from this: the neighborhood's desire to make a daily, silent devotion public for one evening a year.
The heart of the evening is an open-air show featuring music and theater by local artists, ranging from Neapolitan songs to comedy sketches and entertainment designed for audiences of all ages. The format follows the typical Neapolitan patronal feast style: first the religious moment and devotion, then the popular entertainment, in a natural transition between the sacred and the profane that no one here perceives as a contradiction. In 2025, the stage on Via Bosco di Capodimonte hosted the comedy duo Enzo&Sal with their show "Sketch life," while the 2026 edition featured a lineup of local musical and theatrical talent.
The Sant'Anna Festival of Capodimonte is part of the major citywide series «Patronal Feasts. Blessed are those who live them», promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples. In 2026, the series reached its fourth edition, featuring 26 patronal feasts spread across all city municipalities from June 1st to October 17th, all with free admission.
On the same July weekend, the calendar also includes the Sant'Anna Festival in the Paludi area, on Via Strettola Sant'Anna: two distinct festivals dedicated to the same saint, illustrating how widespread the devotion to Anne is within the Neapolitan urban fabric.
Via Bosco di Capodimonte runs alongside the Real Bosco di Capodimonte, the grand royal park commissioned by the Bourbons that surrounds the Capodimonte Museum and Real Bosco, home to one of Italy's most important art galleries. This setting provides the festival with an unusual backdrop: singing and laughing just meters away from the park's 19th-century perimeter wall, with the hill sloping down toward the historic center. For those visiting Naples in July, it is an opportunity to see an authentic patronal feast, far from the tourist circuits, in a metropolitan city of Naples and a Campania region where the calendar of patron saints still marks the summer better than any cultural program.
On Monday, July 27, 2026, at 7:00 PM, Via Bosco di Capodimonte stepped away from its daily routine to host the festival dedicated to Saint Anne. The stage was set up in front of the Porta Piccola of the Real Bosco di Capodimonte, in the San Carlo all'Arena district, following the well-established format: a devotional moment followed by a show open to everyone.
The official program of the Municipality of Naples featured musical and theatrical performances by local artists, with no tickets or reservations required: Neapolitan songs, comedy, and popular theater for a family audience, with neighborhood residents seated along the street.
The festival was part of the "Patronal Feasts. Blessed are those who live them" series, promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples and presented in late May 2026 by Councilor Teresa Armato. The series, now in its fourth edition, brought together 26 patronal feasts from June 1 to October 17, 2026, all free of charge, including the Sant'Anna Festival in the Paludi area, celebrated the previous evening on Via Strettola Sant'Anna with a concert by Mr. Hyde.
The program of the "Patronal Feasts. Blessed are those who live them" series is published by the Municipality of Naples and includes 26 events from June 1 to October 17, 2026.
Via Bosco di Capodimonte, in front of the Porta Piccola of the Real Bosco di Capodimonte, San Carlo all'Arena district, Naples (ZIP 80131).
Admission is free, as with all events in the "Patronal Feasts" series by the Municipality of Naples. Performances begin in the early evening: it is advisable to arrive at least half an hour early to secure a spot in front of the stage.
