The patronal feast of Ferentino

The Festival of Saint Ambrose the Martyr is the most significant event in the calendar of Ferentino, a city in the province of Frosinone, nestled in the heart of the Ciociaria and the Lazio region. Saint Ambrose is the patron saint of both the town and the entire Diocese of Frosinone-Veroli-Ferentino. Every year, between late April and early May, the ancient Hernician town transforms into a vibrant hub of celebration, blending religious devotion with local festivities.

Faith and tradition: the procession of the relics

The spiritual heart of the festival is the Cathedral Basilica of Saints John and Paul, which houses the statue of the patron saint. Celebrations begin with a novena and the exposition of the sacred relics of Saint Ambrose, drawing pilgrims and the faithful alike. The highlight is the evocative procession of the relics, which winds through the historic center accompanied by civil and religious authorities in a solemn parade that unites the entire community.

The civil program: music, fairs, and street performers

Alongside the religious rites, a rich civil program unfolds. The traditional Saint Ambrose fair takes place in the Vascello area, followed by an artisan market in the historic center, while the town squares come alive with street performers, live music, and DJ sets. The event also features major free concerts in Piazza Matteotti, which in recent years have brought renowned contemporary Italian artists to Ferentino, attracting large crowds from across the Ciociaria.

The Pantasuma and fireworks

Among the most characteristic traditions is the Pantasuma, a large bonfire lit in the Santa Lucia district as the procession passes—an ancient ritual that illuminates the festive night. The celebrations conclude in style with a fireworks display that lights up the Piazza del Duomo, followed by the Saint Ambrose lottery draw.
