Patrica's celebration dedicated to the iron cross that watches over the Sacco Valley

The Cross Festival is one of the most iconic events in the calendar of Patrica, a small village perched in the Lepini Mountains within the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region and the Lazio Region. At the heart of the celebration is the monumental iron cross that dominates the summit of Monte Cacume at 1,097 meters above sea level. Standing approximately 14 meters tall, it is considered one of the most imposing crosses in the entire Apennines and is visible from much of the Sacco Valley.
The cross was erected in September 1903, following the 1900 Jubilee, and its construction remains a source of pride for the local community today. The villagers transported the metal pieces on their shoulders and with the help of mules along the steep mountain trails before assembling them at the summit. Beside the cross stands the small Church of the Immaculate Conception, consecrated in 1906 and rebuilt in the 1980s following war damage. The September festival is thus a way to pass down the collective memory of that labor and devotion.
Monte Cacume is no ordinary peak. Its conical shape, recognizable from across the lower province, was cited by Dante Alighieri in the Purgatorio as an example of a difficult-to-reach height, and in the Middle Ages, the Castrum Cacuminis of the Counts of Ceccano stood at its summit. In recent years, the municipality has promoted the so-called Dante's Path, which climbs from Patrica to the cross in about one hour and forty minutes, contributing to a steady increase in the number of hikers.
The Cross Festival is managed by the Associazione Montasi in Caccume, a local group that guides hikers up the mountain year-round and maintains its trails. The traditional program revolves around several recurring moments:
To round out the event, the Monte Cacume Cross Walk usually takes place at the end of September, an excursion open to everyone that extends the festive atmosphere for a few more weeks.
The Cross Festival ideally closes the Patrica Summer, the municipal summer program that brings musical evenings, comedy shows, the town band, the celebrations for the patron saint San Rocco in mid-August, and mountain bike races on natural trails to the village from June to September. Compared to town square events, however, the September festival has a more intimate character tied to the landscape: it is the day when the people of Patrica return to the top to look down at their village from above.
Monte Cacume is also a small natural treasure trove: its karst terrain makes it a natural water reservoir, and its microclimate hosts about fifty species of wild orchids, including the rare Ophrys lacaitae, which blooms between June and July. Those who climb during the festival find a panorama that, on clear days, stretches from the Lepini to the Ernici mountains and all the way to the sea.
At the moment, the Municipality of Patrica has not yet released the 2026 Patrica Summer calendar, and the date for the Cross Festival remains to be confirmed. However, the event is a well-established classic of the September calendar in Patrica, linked to the iron cross that has stood atop Monte Cacume in the Lepini Mountains (Frosinone province) since 1903.
Those wishing to attend can follow the channels of the Municipality and the Associazione Montasi in Caccume, which organizes the ascent to the summit and the celebratory moments at the foot of the cross each year. We recommend checking the date and times before setting out.
Patrica is located about 12 km from Frosinone. By car: A1 motorway, Frosinone exit, then SS 156 of the Lepini Mountains towards Supino. By train: Frosinone station, then local bus connections to the village.
The ascent to the cross starts from the village of Patrica and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes with a challenging elevation gain. Hiking boots, water, and appropriate clothing are essential. The route is not recommended in bad weather.
Participation in the festival and the ascent is traditionally free; any social gatherings organized by the association may require a small fee.
