The Sant'Agata Festival in Castelvecchio Subequo

In the heart of the L'Aquila hinterland, at the foot of the Sirente massif, the small town of Castelvecchio Subequo (province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo) preserves one of the most unique and heartfelt popular devotions in the region: the cult of Sant'Agata. Castelvecchio is considered the only true devotional center for the martyr from Catania in Abruzzo, and every year it renews a rite rooted in ancient traditions, where Christian faith and archaic memory intertwine.

The Sant'Agata loaves

The absolute symbol of the festival is the Sant'Agata loaves, votive breads shaped like female breasts in memory of the martyrdom of the saint, the protector of women and mothers. They are prepared with local stone-ground Solina wheat flour, boiled potatoes, sourdough, eggs, oil, and anise seeds, in both sweet and savory versions. On the afternoon of February 4th, the loaves, along with water, are blessed and then immersed in the water of the Sant'Agata spring, which has always been considered miraculous.

The miraculous spring and the procession

Next to the rural church dedicated to the saint flows a spring where, in the past, pregnant or breastfeeding women would go for ablutions, praying that they would not lack milk and to protect themselves from breast diseases. On February 5th, the saint's dies natalis, after the religious service, the community gathers for the procession: the statue of Sant'Agata is carried on the shoulders exclusively by the women of the village, followed by the distribution of the blessed bread to the faithful.

One village, two appointments

Devotion to Sant'Agata in Castelvecchio Subequo is renewed twice a year: on February 4th and 5th, on the saint's liturgical day, and on August 20th, a day linked to threshing and field work. The rite takes place in the setting of a charming village, known as the "little Assisi of Abruzzo" for the presence of the Franciscan convent of San Francesco and the early Christian catacombs, a destination for those who want to discover the history of the L'Aquila hinterland.

Who organizes it

The festival is organized by the Centro Sociale Lacetelene together with the Pro Loco of Castelvecchio Subequo and the Friars Minor Conventual, under the patronage of the Municipality. It is a free-entry event, deeply rooted in the community, which combines liturgy, traditional gastronomy, and collective memory.
