About San Zeno Carnival

In the hamlet of San Zeno di Mozzecane, the carnival retains its most authentic and parish-centered character. The protagonists are Count Codega and the Papà del Gnoco, the historic mask of the Veronese carnival, who even go to church in the morning before animating the festivities in the parish spaces. Gnocchi, fritters, and traditional sweets accompany a day of joy for the entire community.

The Hamlet's Carnival

The San Zeno Carnival of Mozzecane takes place in the hamlet of San Zeno, in the municipality of Mozzecane, in the Veronese plain. It is a carnival with an ancient and community feel, deeply linked to the life of the parish and the traditional masks of Verona.

Count Codega and the Papà del Gnoco

The main figures are Count Codega with Countess Verza, local masks, and the Papà del Gnoco, the symbol par excellence of the Verona carnival, recognizable by his scepter shaped like a large fork with a gnocco pierced on it. According to a curious and deeply felt custom, on carnival morning the masks go to church for mass before the actual celebrations begin.

Gnocchi, Fritters, and Conviviality

The feast continues in the parish spaces with the classic dishes of the Veronese carnival: gnocchi, potatoes, sandwiches, and traditional fried sweets. In the preceding days, the masks of Mozzecane and San Zeno visit the local elementary schools, bringing the spirit of carnival to the youngest. A genuine event that preserves the popular roots of this corner of the Veronese region.

San Zeno Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 San Zeno Carnival of Mozzecane took place on Sunday, February 8, with Count Codega and Papà del Gnoco attending church in the morning before the festivities in the parish spaces. Starting at 10:00 AM, lunch was served with gnocchi, potatoes, sandwiches, and traditional carnival sweets.

The 2026 edition of the San Zeno Carnival of Mozzecane revived the traditional rite with the masks of Count Codega and Papà del Gnoco, who were also protagonists of the religious moment, before the convivial feast in the parish spaces of the hamlet.
