Two evenings of dance and local taste in Contrada Pescara, in the heart of upper Irpinia
The San Vito Celebrations are the annual event that the Contrada Pescara of Conza della Campania, located in the town's PIP zone, dedicates to its patron saint. It is not the town's main patronal feastโthat is reserved for Saint Erberto, celebrated in mid-Augustโbut rather a local community tradition that brings people together in the same square for two consecutive evenings at the end of July. It captures a quintessential Irpinian spirit: popular devotion, neighbourhood ties, shared meals, and open-air dancing are all part of a single ritual, meaningful both for year-round residents and for those who return to the village for the summer.
For several seasons now, the celebrations have been paired with the Ancient Flavours Festival, which provides the event with its culinary identity and has become its second soul. The name says it all: the cuisine of the peasant memory of the upper Ofanto valley, featuring humble ingredients prepared with care, served at stalls set up in the district and enjoyed at outdoor tables. The local Conza tradition for this time of year has always revolved around popular dishes like migliariello, salt cod (baccalร ), and roast pork (porchetta), which municipal archives note for this same calendar window: today's festival carries on that legacy under a new name.
The format for the two evenings follows the classic Southern village festival style: it begins around 8:00 PM, as the heat fades, with a live band accompanying the dance evening, continuing late into the night. In 2026, the first night features 'Folk in progress' followed by a DJ set, while the second evening showcases 'Armonia Italiana'. Ballroom dancing, Italian pop music, and folk reinterpretations: a repertoire designed to bring generations together, from grandparents opening the dance floor to young people staying until the very end.
The celebrations are not an isolated event: they are part of the Estate Conzana programme, a calendar running from June 20th to August 28th that fills the town with book presentations, sports tournaments, children's workshops, archaeological seminars, evenings at the Lake Conza WWF Oasis, and food festivals. The programme is promoted by the Municipality of Conza della Campania together with the Pro Loco, the Youth Forum, and numerous local associations, and is featured on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino. The San Vito evenings represent the highlight of late July, just before the major patronal event in August.
The town hosting the festival is one of the most unique places in inland Campania. Destroyed by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, the historic centre was not rebuilt but transformed into the Archaeological Park of ancient Compsa, a Samnite city and later a Roman municipality, where the forum, amphitheatre, and cathedral still remain; the modern town was reborn further down the valley. Nearby, the Lake Conza WWF Oasis is one of the most important wetlands in Southern Italy for birdwatching, with hundreds of species recorded along the Ofanto reservoir. Visitors arriving for the festival can easily combine the evening with a day spent between archaeology and nature, in a corner of the Avellino province still largely untouched by mass tourism.
In the Estate Conzana 2026 calendar, which accompanied Conza della Campania from June 20th to August 28th, the two evenings at the end of July in Contrada Pescara represented the most anticipated event of the month. The formula remained the tried-and-tested one: opening at 8:00 PM, Ancient Flavours Festival stalls operating throughout the evening, and live music for dancing, with the public seated at outdoor tables in the PIP zone area.
On Saturday, July 25th, the stage was hosted by 'Folk in progress', with the evening continuing from 10:00 PM with a DJ set by Giuseppe Placanica and Voice EL. On Sunday, July 26th, it was the turn of 'Armonia Italiana', again with a dance evening and the food festival. Both dates took place in Contrada Pescara, with free entry.
The organization, as with the entire summer programme, was managed by the Municipality of Conza della Campania with the Pro Loco, the Youth Forum, and local village associations, with promotion by the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino. The San Vito weekend preceded the patronal celebrations of Saint Erberto by a few weeks, scheduled from August 18th to 22nd.

The evenings are held in Contrada Pescara, in the PIP zone of Conza della Campania (AV), postcode 83040. This is an open-air area with food stalls and a dance floor.
By car: Take the Lioni-Grottaminarda exit on the Avellino-Salerno motorway or the Ofantina state road; Conza della Campania can be reached via the SS 7 Ofantina and the SS 399. It is about an hour's drive from Avellino and slightly more from Salerno. Free parking is available near the festival area.
By train: The nearest useful station is Lioni, on the Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line; service is limited, so it is better to plan for a car for the final leg.
Free access to the festival area. Tastings at the food stalls are paid for at the cash desks; price lists are not published on official sources.
Eating and dancing take place outdoors in a town at an altitude of 440 metres: a light sweater for the latter part of the evening is useful even in July. For updated information, it is best to contact the Municipality of Conza della Campania (tel. +39 0827 39013) or the Pro Loco.
