The Patron Saint Festival of Asti and the start of the Palio Year
The San Secondo Celebrations are the beating heart of Asti, located in the heart of Piedmont. Dedicated to the patron saint—a soldier and martyr who, according to tradition, has protected the city since the Middle Ages—the event brings the squares and streets of the historic center to life for about ten days in early May. This is more than just a religious observance: it is the moment when Asti renews its connection to history and officially launches the Palio Year, the long season that culminates in the Palio Race on the third Sunday of September.
The program alternates between solemn rites and popular festivities. The religious core of the celebrations is the Palio Offering ceremony at the Collegiate Church of San Secondo on the patron saint's day, when the historical pageant reaches the church for Holy Mass. Afterward, in the square, the traditional distribution of the "Minestra dei Poveri" (Soup of the Poor) takes place—a gesture of solidarity with ancient roots, featuring beans prepared by local Pro Loco associations.
The days are marked by historical pageants, flag-waving performances, a fireworks display on the banks of the Tanaro river, and the Flag-wavers' Palio in Piazza Alfieri. A large funfair is set up in Piazza Campo del Palio for the duration of the festival, while the historic center hosts the Carolingian Fair, with hundreds of stalls reflecting the city's mercantile and medieval heritage.
The San Secondo Celebrations involve the entire community of Asti and its province, attracting visitors from across Piedmont and beyond. The awarding of the Order of San Secondo, a recognition the city bestows upon those who have distinguished themselves in its service, seals the civic value of a festival that unites devotion, historical memory, and local pride.
The celebrations take place every year in early May, with the patron saint's feast day set for May 5th. The program spans approximately ten days.
The hub of the events is Piazza San Secondo, home to the Collegiate Church, but the festivities spread throughout the historic center of Asti: Piazza Cattedrale, Piazza Roma, Piazza Alfieri, the Lungotanaro Park, and Piazza Campo del Palio (site of the funfair).
Asti is well-connected by train (Turin-Genoa and Turin-Alessandria lines) and can be reached by car via the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway, taking the Asti Est or Asti Ovest exits. During the festivities, the historic center is largely pedestrianized; using peripheral parking lots is recommended.
Almost all events are free to attend. The funfair and the Carolingian Fair follow individual operator pricing.
