The San Secondino Festival is the most cherished religious and cultural event in Bellona, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania. Held every year in late May, the occasion honors the patron saint with several days of celebrations that weave together faith, tradition, and community life, drawing back emigrants and families originally from Bellona.

Who was San Secondino

According to tradition, San Secondino was an African bishop from the early centuries of Christianity who, exiled from his homeland, arrived on the coasts of Campania and settled in Bellona to convert the local population. His veneration in the Capua area has been documented for centuries. The Archpriest Church of San Secondino Bishop and Confessor, the town's mother church with origins dating back to the 15th century, houses an ancient relic of the saint and the statue created by sculptor Luigi De Luca in 1916, after the previous image was destroyed in a fire in 1915.

The procession and rituals

The heart of the festival is the solemn procession that, on the main day, winds through the streets of the historic center: the statue of San Secondino is carried on a flower-decked float, preceded by civil and religious authorities and followed by the faithful. The days are marked by Eucharistic celebrations and moments of prayer in the archpriest church, in a quiet atmosphere that coexists with the festive mood of the streets.

Music, lights, and fireworks

Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival offers the traditional elements of Southern Italian patronal feasts: marching bands accompanying the parades, evening concerts in the square, artistic illuminations decorating the town, and, to close the festivities, spectacular fireworks. It is a moment of gathering that involves all generations and renews, year after year, the bond between the inhabitants and their patron saint.

Bellona and its traditions

Bellona is a town rich in popular devotion: in addition to San Secondino, the local calendar includes feasts in honor of Maria SS. di Gerusalemme during the Easter period, Maria SS. delle Grazie in early summer, and Saint Francis of Assisi in autumn. The San Secondino Festival, however, remains the quintessential identity-defining celebration, recognized by the Municipality of Bellona and the community as the patronal feast, the spiritual and cultural heart of the Caserta town.
