The 'Sciuta' and ten days of celebrations for the patron saint of Palazzolo Acreide
In the town of Palazzolo Acreide, located in the province of Syracuse in the heart of south-eastern Sicily, the San Sebastiano Summer Festival stands as one of the most intense devotional events in the entire Iblean region. For ten days, from August 8th to 17th, this UNESCO-listed Baroque village gathers around its patron saint in a succession of religious rites, popular traditions, exhibitions, concerts, and fireworks displays that involve the entire community.
The most anticipated day is August 10th, when the famous 'Sciuta' takes place: at 1:00 PM, the statue of the Saint and the reliquary emerge from the Basilica of San Sebastiano, carried on the bare shoulders of dozens of young men down the scenic steps of Piazza del Popolo. It is a moment of profound emotion, accompanied by the thunder of cannon fire, the release of thousands of 'nzareddi' (long, colorful paper ribbons), and the sounds of brass bands. Women follow the procession barefoot, and children are offered to the Saint as a votive gesture.
The festival preserves ancient customs passed down through generations:
The cult of San Sebastiano in Palazzolo dates back to the 15th century, when devotion to the martyr spread throughout the Iblean district. The summer festival, set for August 10th, replaced the ancient feast of the Madonna Odigitria and is linked to the agricultural rhythms of the harvest's end. The Basilica of San Sebastiano, with its monumental late-Baroque facade overlooking Piazza del Popolo, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002.
The festivities conclude on August 17th with the Octave: in the late afternoon, the reliquary is carried in procession through the streets of the town on the 'varicedda' (a small float), leading up to the grand finale with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky over Palazzolo Acreide.
The 2026 San Sebastiano Summer Festival brings Palazzolo Acreide to life from August 8th to 17th. On August 8th, the charity 'Pesca' and the photography exhibition open; on August 9th, after the evening 'Svelata' of the statue, Piazza del Popolo hosts a concert with Sugarfree, Luca Madonia, and Lautari (around 10:30 PM).
August 10th is the highlight: early in the morning, cannon fire and the blessing of the 'cuddure', followed by the solemn 'Sciuta' of the Saint at 1:00 PM amidst ribbons and brass bands. In the evening, the procession and the fireworks finale. The festivities conclude on August 17th with the Octave and another fireworks display. Religious events and concerts are free to attend.
Palazzolo Acreide is located in the Iblean hinterland of the province of Syracuse. By car, take the A18/SS114 motorway and head inland; the nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso. The rites take place around the Basilica of San Sebastiano in Piazza del Popolo, in the historic center.
From August 8th to 17th, with the 'Sciuta' on August 10th at 1:00 PM and the Octave on August 17th. Religious celebrations and concerts in the square are free to attend.
Arrive well in advance on August 10th and 17th: the historic center becomes very crowded with pilgrims and visitors. We recommend checking the updated official program on the Festival Committee's channels.
