The traditional Abruzzo Carnival featuring masks, parades, and family festivities
The San Salvo Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events in the municipality of San Salvo, located in the province of Chieti along the southern coast of Abruzzo. Rooted in the traditional "Lu Carnuvale" of Abruzzese folk culture, the festival has reclaimed a prominent role in recent years, with mask and float parades coloring the city's squares and streets in the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday.
The heart of the event is dedicated to children and families. Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII transforms into a true amusement park with installations, small rides, miniature trains, and inflatable structures, while the main event days feature grand outdoor entertainment. The festival offers a rich calendar:
In San Salvo, Carnival is a collective ritual that involves local associations, parishes, and city educational centers. Alongside the public events, the community organizes social gatherings like masked dinners, where young people and educators create imaginative and original costumes. The festival thus maintains a strong social value, centered on inclusion and shared joy.
Some initiatives take place at the San Salvo Marina Sports Hall, where masked parades for children and families turn the evening into an "enchanted kingdom" populated by princesses, superheroes, and fairy-tale characters. San Salvo, a town that grew in the second half of the 20th century thanks to industry and seaside tourism, finds in Carnival an opportunity for community gathering that unites the historic center and the seaside district.
In the Abruzzese tradition, Carnival represents a celebration of life and renewal, with roots reaching back to ancient seasonal rites. San Salvo is part of the rich Carnival landscape in the province of Chieti, alongside celebrations in neighboring towns like Francavilla al Mare, Ortona, and Atessa, offering visitors an authentic way to experience the Abruzzo winter.
The 2026 Carnival in San Salvo took place during the Shrove Tuesday period, with events spread between the city center and the seaside district. The party dedicated to families and children was held at the San Salvo Marina Sports Hall, where about 200 masks brought an evening of fun to life.
The typical attractions of the festival were all there: entertainment, inflatables, body-painting, and soap bubbles accompanied the little ones, while the space transformed into an "enchanted kingdom" populated by princesses, superheroes, and fairy-tale characters. Alongside the public events, the San Salvo community also offered social moments such as masked dinners organized by local educational centers, confirming the strong social and inclusive value of the event.
