The reading festival for children and teens in the Gardens of Palazzo d'Avalos, Vasto
Orizzonti di Carta is a reading festival designed for young people that transforms the evocative Neapolitan Gardens of Palazzo d'Avalos in Vasto (Chieti) into a large open-air laboratory dedicated to books, imagination, and creativity every summer. The event is aimed at children and teens, combining book presentations with moments of play, listening, and active participation.
The heart of the festival is the direct encounter between young readers and the protagonists of the literary world. Authors and illustrators read and present their works through animated readings, then guide children in creative workshops that everyone can join. Drawing, writing, crafting, and interactive activities turn reading into a tangible and shared experience, tailored to different age groups.
The setting of the Palazzo d'Avalos Gardens, a historic noble residence overlooking the gulf, offers an ideal backdrop for the festival's summer evenings. The initiative is organized by the Chiara nei Libri association with the patronage of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Vasto, which has earned the national recognition of 'City that Reads'. Investing in the culture of the youngest, the organizers remind us, means building the foundations for a community's future.
Established in 2024, Orizzonti di Carta has quickly established itself as one of the most anticipated events of the Abruzzo cultural summer dedicated to young people. The festival is part of the rich 'Estate Vastese' calendar and engages with other historic center events, such as the Notte in Centro, helping to make Vasto a reference point for promoting reading in Abruzzo.
The third edition of Orizzonti di Carta is scheduled for July 25 and 26, 2026, in the Neapolitan Gardens of Palazzo d'Avalos, in the historic center of Vasto. The reading festival for children and teens confirms the formula that led to its success: animated readings, meetings with authors and illustrators, and creative workshops open to the participation of the youngest.
The festival intertwines with the Notte in Centro on July 25-26, with children's activities opening the afternoon at the D'Avalos Gardens. The mornings of July 25, 26, and 27 also offer reading sessions in the 'Irma Perrotti' Room of the R. Mattioli Library Hub. The full program with guests for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organization in the weeks leading up to the event.
