About Saint Emidius

On August 5th and 6th, Cerro al Volturno, a medieval village in the Isernia area dominated by its picturesque Angevin castle, celebrates the patronal feast of Saint Emidius and Our Lady of Sorrows. A devotional triduum, a torchlight procession through the districts, a dance orchestra, and concerts animate two intense days, blending faith, music, and tradition in the upper Volturno valley.

The patronal feast of Cerro al Volturno

On August 5th and 6th, Cerro al Volturno, in the province of Isernia, celebrates its patronal feast in honor of Saint Emidius and Our Lady of Sorrows. The village, one of the most evocative in Molise, is dominated by the picturesque Angevin castle (Pandone Castle), which stands on a rocky outcrop in the upper Volturno valley.

Triduum, torchlight procession, and procession

The religious celebrations begin with the triduum in honor of Saint Emidius (from August 2nd to 4th) at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, accompanied by a workshop dedicated to the saint at the Nicola Spina Pastoral Center. On the evening of August 4th, the evocative torchlight procession takes place through the village districts. Saint Emidius, born in 273 and ordained a priest by Saint Maternus, is venerated as a protector against earthquakes.

Music and entertainment

The two main days combine devotion with popular celebration: August 5th is dedicated to the dance orchestra with ballroom and Latin-American music, while August 6th features the grand evening concert. A tried-and-tested formula that draws residents and emigrants back to the village in the heart of the Molise summer, at the foot of Cerro al Volturno castle.
