The patronal feast of Penna Sant'Andrea

On August 16th, the village of Penna Sant'Andrea, a municipality in the province of Teramo in Abruzzo, gathers to honor its patron saint, San Rocco. The anniversary falls on a fixed date in the liturgical calendar and represents one of the most heartfelt events of the summer for the entire community, which experiences Ferragosto through faith, tradition, and conviviality.

San Rocco, protector against epidemics

San Rocco, a French pilgrim who lived in the 14th century, is among the most venerated saints in Italy: as a protector against the plague and contagious diseases, he is also invoked for the protection of livestock and animals. Thousands of churches and chapels across the peninsula are dedicated to him, and in Penna Sant'Andrea, his devotion is renewed every year on August 16th with a procession and religious celebrations starting from the parish church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, a 16th-century building later restored in the 18th century, which houses furnishings and a 1616 altarpiece from the ancient church of San Giusta.

A village of ancient traditions

Penna Sant'Andrea stands on a ridge overlooking the Vomano Valley: its name derives from the Latin pinna, meaning a sharp or pointed place. A settlement of Sabine origins and an ancient Roman colony, it retains the structure of a medieval fortified village, having long been a fiefdom of the Acquaviva family. It is a town deeply linked to folklore: it preserves the ancient Laccio d'amore dance, performed throughout Italy and abroad by the local folk group, and the historic International Folklore Meeting is held here every first week of August. The San Rocco feast fits into this fabric of living traditions, extending the festive atmosphere of the Penna summer.

Faith, community, and public celebration

As in most Abruzzo patronal feasts, alongside the religious program—Holy Masses, a procession with the saint's statue through the streets of the center—there is a public program featuring illuminations, music, market stalls, and moments of conviviality in the square. It is the time when emigrants and families return to the village, and when the local rustic gastronomy, featuring pecorino cheese and the famous arrosticini, accompanies the festivities. An intimate and authentic event, far from the major tourist flows, that restores the most genuine sense of the Abruzzo village feast.
