San Rocco Festival (Co-patron of Nettuno)

An ancient devotion on the Roman coast

The San Rocco Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious events in Nettuno, a seaside city in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. A fixed date on the liturgical calendar, it is celebrated every year on August 16th, in the heart of summer, when the historic center and the seafront are bustling with residents and tourists. San Rocco is remembered by the people of Nettuno as an ancient patron of the city, now joined in patronage by Our Lady of Grace and Saint Maria Goretti, the young saint whose remains rest in the city's Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary and the square that bears his name

The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Grace and Saint Maria Goretti, located in Piazza San Rocco. This is no coincidence: the large neo-Gothic building, erected starting in 1914 by the Passionist Fathers with the support of Pope Pius X, stands where a small 16th-century church dedicated to the Annunciation once existed, commonly called by the people the church of San Rocco. Inside, alongside the venerated wooden image of Our Lady of Grace—which tradition says arrived from the sea in 1550—are the statues of Saint Sebastian and San Rocco. For this reason, in Nettuno, Our Lady of Grace is still called by many elders the Madonna of San Rocco.

The August 16th Procession

The most anticipated moment is the evening procession. The statue of San Rocco, featuring the pilgrim's staff and the dog that accompanies his iconography, is carried on the shoulders of members of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Grace. It travels through the city streets and along the seafront, accompanied by the Sanctuary clergy, civil and military authorities, and a long procession of the faithful. It is not uncommon to see the mayor and representatives of law enforcement personally take their turn under the litter, a gesture that in Nettuno is interpreted as a sign of belonging to the community even before one of devotion.

A saint of pilgrims and the sick

San Rocco, a pilgrim from Montpellier who lived in the 14th century, is invoked throughout Italy as a protector against epidemics and as the patron of travelers and the sick. His widespread presence in Central and Southern communities is explained by the great waves of plague in past centuries, when entire towns entrusted themselves to his intercession. In Nettuno, the cult is intertwined with the history of a seafaring city, accustomed to asking for protection for those who leave and those who stay.

Those arriving for the patronal festival can easily combine the religious day with a visit to the Medieval Village, Forte Sangallo, and the American Military Cemetery, as well as a stop at the coastal beaches.
