About San Rocco and San Magno Feast

Every year in mid-August, the mountain village of Colle San Magno, in the province of Frosinone, celebrates its patron saints with the San Rocco and San Magno Patronal Feast. Between August 16 and 19, the streets of the historic center come alive with solemn processions, brass bands, and fireworks, weaving together popular devotion and the homecoming of emigrant families. It is the most heartfelt moment of the Ciociaria summer, when the entire community reconnects with its roots.

The patronal feast of the village of Colle San Magno

Perched at an altitude of about 550 meters on the slopes of the Cairo and Asprano Mountains, the small town of Colle San Magno, in the province of Frosinone, guards its most cherished tradition in the heart of summer: the San Rocco and San Magno Patronal Feast. It is an event that intertwines religious faith with the identity of an entire town in the Ciociaria region of southern Lazio, attracting residents, visitors, and especially the many emigrants who return to their native village for these days every year.

San Rocco and San Magno, two midsummer devotions

The celebrations traditionally take place around mid-August. On August 16, the community honors San Rocco, a protector invoked against epidemics and a figure deeply rooted in the popular culture of Italy's villages. The highlight, however, arrives on August 19, the day dedicated to San Magno, the bishop and martyr venerated as the town's patron saintโ€”the village owes its very name to him. According to tradition, it was Saint Magno of Anagni who brought Christianity to this part of southern Lazio, and his figure remains the cornerstone of local identity.

Procession, brass band, and fireworks

The heart of the festival is the solemn procession that winds through the narrow stone streets of the medieval historic center, dominated by the civic tower. The statue of the patron saint is carried on shoulders through the village houses, accompanied by a brass band playing traditional marches. As evening falls, fireworks illuminate the sky above the mountains, bringing the festivities to a spectacular close. There is no shortage of convivial moments featuring typical local cuisine, from lamb and frionza to polenta, along with the promotion of the prized truffles found in these mountains.

A festival in the heart of the summer

The patronal feast is part of a rich summer program that enlivens Colle San Magno throughout August, with over twenty initiatives organized by the Municipality together with the Parish of San Magno, the Pro Loco, and local associations. Alongside religious celebrations, there are historical re-enactments in the old town, gastronomic evenings in the illuminated streets, musical events, and the Emigrant's Feast, dedicated to citizens who left the town and return during these weeks to embrace their homeland once again.

A village to discover

Visiting Colle San Magno during the patronal feast means immersing yourself in an authentic, off-the-beaten-path Italy, made of stone alleys, mountain views, and traditions passed down from generation to generation. The devotion to San Rocco and San Magno is the ideal opportunity to get to know a lesser-known corner of the province of Frosinone, where hospitality and a sense of community remain vibrant and tangible values.
