A journey through taste, local heritage, and conviviality in the village of San Polo di Tarano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
San Polo DiVino is the food and wine event that, every June, transforms the small village of San Polo โ a hamlet of the Municipality of Tarano, in the province of Rieti โ into an open-air trail of flavors. Presented as "a journey through taste, territory, and conviviality," the festival invites residents and visitors to rediscover the village cellars, local wines, and traditional Sabina cuisine in a genuine and welcoming village atmosphere.
San Polo Sabino is a tiny medieval village of just under two hundred inhabitants, nestled on a natural terrace overlooking the Aia creek valley, a tributary of the Tiber. Its origins are linked to the decline of the ancient Roman municipality of Forum Novum, and over the centuries, the village has preserved the compact layout typical of Sabina castles: narrow alleys, stone houses, and, at the base of the dwellings, the cellars where families have always made and stored their wine. These cellars are the true stars of the festival: during San Polo DiVino, they open to the public and become stops on a culinary itinerary that winds through the village lanes.
The heart of the evening lies in the tastings: local wines to be sampled directly in the cellars and traditional rural Sabina dishes served along the route. Everything is accompanied by live music, which enlivens the small squares and alleys until late. The 2025 edition, held on Saturday, June 14, featured exactly this formula: tastings, traditional flavors, and concerts in a village dressed for the occasion.
Lower Sabina, a borderland between the inland Lazio Region and the Tiber valley, is famous above all for its Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil, but it also preserves a deeply rooted family winemaking tradition: almost every house in the villages had its own vineyard and cellar. Festivals like San Polo DiVino are born to keep this memory alive, enhancing a rural heritage made of gestures, recipes, and conviviality. The Tarano area, also promoted through the GeoSabina portal, is perfect for walks among hills, vineyards, and paths with views over the Tiber valley.
Opening the cellars of San Polo is not a recent novelty: as early as the mid-2010s, the village hosted a festival dedicated to ancient flavors with cellars open to the public, traditional menus, and roving bands playing through the streets. San Polo DiVino picks up this legacy and relaunches it with a renewed look, confirming the village's vocation as a small capital of conviviality in the Rieti Sabina.
The festival is also an excellent excuse to visit Tarano and its hamlets: the main town with the church of San Giorgio, the panoramas over the Aia valley, and the nearby Sabina villages, including Collevecchio and Stimigliano. Less than an hour's drive from Rome, San Polo DiVino offers an authentic evening far from the most beaten tourist paths.
At the moment, there are no official announcements regarding the 2026 edition of San Polo DiVino. The festival, which opens the cellars of the village of San Polo di Tarano (RI) with wine tastings, traditional Sabina dishes, and live music, was held in mid-June 2025. If the formula is confirmed, 2026 should also feature an evening among the village alleys dedicated to taste, territory, and conviviality. We will update this page as soon as the organization publishes the official date and program.
The festival is held in the village of San Polo (San Polo Sabino), a hamlet of the Municipality of Tarano, in the province of Rieti (ZIP 02040), in the Lazio region.
By car: from Rome or Florence, take the A1 motorway and exit at Ponzano RomanoโSoratte or Magliano Sabina, then follow provincial roads towards Tarano and San Polo. By train: the most convenient stations are on the RomeโOrte line (including Stimigliano and Poggio Mirteto), from which you can continue by car or taxi.
In past editions, access to the village was free; for details on methods and costs of tastings, it is advisable to check the event's channels and the GeoSabina portal closer to the date.
The village is compact and best explored on foot: comfortable shoes are recommended for the stone alleys. In the past, a shuttle service was provided from the fairgrounds in the Borgonuovo hamlet of Tarano; please check the availability of parking and shuttles on official channels before setting off.
