Three nights of music, entertainment, and Cilento flavors in Piazza Tempone
At the end of June, Capaccio Capoluogo, the hilltop village that overlooks the plain of Paestum from its natural balcony, celebrates the San Pietro Festival. The heart of the event is Piazza Tempone, in the town center, which transforms for three consecutive nights into a large open-air venue with a stage, lights, stalls, and food areas. It is a community festival in the truest sense: promoted by the festival committee, it thrives on the hard work of volunteers and the participation of local associations, who every year bring to life the most anticipated event of the village's summer.
The 2026 edition took place from Saturday, June 27 to Monday, June 29, concluding on the liturgical feast day dedicated to the Apostle Peter. Three nights, three different styles, all with free admission:
Next to the stage, for all three nights, food areas remain open with local specialties and traditional regional dishes.
The culinary aspect is one of the reasons the festival attracts visitors from neighboring hamlets and the coast. The stands set up around the square offer home-style Cilento cooking, featuring simple products and family recipes: handmade pasta, seasonal vegetables, local cheeses and cured meats, and desserts prepared for the occasion. You can eat standing up or at the outdoor tables, just a few meters from the stage: it is the most direct way to get into the rhythm of a Campanian village festival.
Devotion to Saint Peter the Apostle is deeply rooted in Capaccio Capoluogo, where the parish named after the saint has marked the community's collective moments for centuries. June 29, the fixed date in the liturgical calendar, is the pivot around which everything else revolves: the preceding days are dedicated to the secular side of the festival, with music and shows, while the anniversary itself retains its religious character. It is the classic pattern of Southern festivals, where the sacred and the popular coexist seamlessly in the same urban space.
The San Pietro Festival is an inclusive event: children literally open the first night with ballet and majorettes, older crowds gather for the revival DJ set, and the comedy finale on June 29 appeals to all generations. The final raffle, with the prize drawing, is the ritual that officially closes the festivities and keeps the square full until late every year. There is no ticket: entry is free, and you only pay for what you consume at the stands.
Capaccio Capoluogo is the historic core of the Municipality of Capaccio Paestum, in the province of Salerno, Campania. Perched on the slopes of Mount Calpazio, the village overlooks the Sele plain and the Paestum archaeological area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is just a few kilometers toward the sea. This dual nature — hill and coast, medieval village and Greek temples — makes the late June festival an interesting opportunity even for those vacationing on the Cilento coast: in half an hour, you can go from the beaches of Paestum to the narrow streets of the capital, where you can experience a less touristy and more authentic side of Campania.
Compared to the large summer festivals in Campania, the San Pietro Festival does not rely on big names but on the atmosphere: an entire town in the square, music echoing through the alleys, the scent of the grills, and groups of friends reuniting after the winter. It is the type of event that captures the character of a Cilento community better than any guidebook, and it is best enjoyed by arriving early, as the square begins to fill up and the sun sets behind the hills.
The 2026 San Pietro Festival occupied Piazza Tempone for three consecutive nights, from Saturday, June 27 to Monday, June 29, with free admission. The program alternated music, dance, and comedy, maintaining the proven village festival formula: central stage, food stands all around, and the square filling up after dinner.
The first evening was dedicated to dance, with a revival DJ set by Tony Tilt and guest vocalist Claudia, preceded by a performance by the children. Sunday brought Neapolitan song to the stage with Sal Esposito's «Napolitudine». Monday, the day dedicated to the Apostle, closed the festivities with the comedy show «Villa per bene» and the traditional raffle.
In 2026, the event confirmed its family-oriented appeal, with a diverse audience arriving from the village, the hamlets of Capaccio Paestum, and nearby coastal towns.
