Devotion, nature, and sport in honor of the first patron saint of Cantalice
In the village of Cantalice, perched on the slopes of Mount Terminillo in the province of Rieti, in the heart of the Sabine region of Lazio, the San Gregorio Magno Festival and Walk is one of the community's most cherished events. The celebration, held in March, intertwines the religious dimension with hiking and sport, offering an experience that, in the words of the organizers, unites faith, nature, and sport.
Pope Gregory I, known as the Great (Magno), is the first patron saint of Cantalice. The town chose him as its protector following one of the terrible plague epidemics that struck the territory in 1528 and 1657. The hermitage church dedicated to him stands on a panoramic hill and was first mentioned in a papal bull in 1153 as a monastery. The place of worship is located along the paths of Saint Benedict and Saint Francis, which cross these lands, and maintains a deep bond with the spirituality of the Rieti valley.
The heart of the event is the Walk for San Gregorio, a walking route that starts from Piazza Chiesa Madonna della Pace and leads the faithful and hikers along the trails and hills surrounding the village. It is a way to experience devotion while moving through nature, rediscovering the landscape of the Sabina region and the sense of community that characterizes the small towns of the Lazio Apennines. The walk precedes and prepares for the central liturgical moment of the day.
The solemn Holy Mass, celebrated within the framework of the patronal feast, attracts civil and military authorities, confraternities, the choir, and numerous faithful, including many children, every year. The entire community of Cantalice gathers around the figure of the saint, also sharing moments of conviviality organized by volunteers and the Saletta dei Ricordi Cultural Association. The village, after all, is deeply linked to devotion: Cantalice is also the home of Saint Felice da Cantalice, the first Capuchin saint, a beloved figure celebrated in local tradition.
Visiting Cantalice during the San Gregorio Magno Festival means discovering one of the most evocative villages in inland Lazio: a maze of stone alleys overlooking the Rieti plain and Lake Ripasottile, just a few kilometers from Rieti, considered the geographical center of Italy. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Cantalice together with local associations, represents an authentic opportunity to learn about the popular traditions, faith, and hospitality of this part of the Sabina region.
On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Cantalice renewed its devotion to San Gregorio Magno with a day dedicated to faith, nature, and sport. The gathering was held in Piazza Chiesa Madonna della Pace starting in the afternoon, followed by the start of the Walk for San Gregorio. The celebration saw a very large turnout, with the presence of civil and military authorities, confraternities, the choir, and numerous faithful.
The highlight was the Holy Mass celebrated by the Bishop of Rieti, His Excellency Monsignor Vito Piccinonna, whose words touched the hearts of those present. During the festival, a work depicting Saint Felice da Cantalice, created by artists Enrico Di Sisto and Franco Cervelli, was also presented. The day concluded with a moment of conviviality offered by the volunteers and the Saletta dei Ricordi Cultural Association.
Cantalice is located in the province of Rieti, a few kilometers from the capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS4 Salaria and the provincial roads that climb towards Terminillo. The reference railway station is Rieti, which is connected by local bus lines.
The festival takes place in March, near the traditional feast day of the patron saint (March 12). The gathering and the Walk start from Piazza Chiesa Madonna della Pace.
Participation in the celebrations and the walk is free and open to all. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the walking route.
