About Our Lady of the Rosary

Every August, the small medieval village of Morro Reatino in the province of Rieti pays tribute to Our Lady of the Rosary with a festival that weaves together liturgy, memory, and village life. Held during the summer patronal celebrations alongside those of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, the event draws locals, returning emigrants, and visitors to the historic center to experience a popular tradition that has remained unchanged over time.

A Marian festival in the heart of the Montepiano Reatino

The Our Lady of the Rosary Festival is one of the most cherished events of the summer in Morro Reatino, a village of a few hundred inhabitants perched on a rocky spur in the Valle del Fuscello, in the province of Rieti, in northeastern Lazio. Here, Marian devotion is not an isolated event but the backbone of the community calendar: August is the month when the village comes back to life, houses reopen, and religious celebrations become the moment when the community truly reconnects.

The festival is part of the town's summer cycle of events, celebrated alongside those of the patron saint, Saint Lawrence the Martyr, whose feast day falls on August 10th. The local volunteer association, ODV Morro Reatino, led by Fausto Roselli, coordinates the festivities in synergy with the municipal administration and the parish, with the declared goal of welcoming visitors and keeping the community united.

The legend of the Madonna Mozzapiedi

Devotion in Morro has ancient and surprising roots. Tradition tells that in an era of raids and brigand incursions, some attackers attempted to climb toward the fortress at night: the Virgin appeared, enveloped in a blinding light, and the attackers' feet were severed as they climbed the hill. This episode gave rise to the popular name Madonna Mozzapiedi (Our Lady of the Severed Feet). In 1480, the women of Morro sought to commemorate the miracle by commissioning a painting of the Virgin, accompanied by a devotional inscription that can still be read today. The fresco is preserved in the Church of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, which also houses the saint's urn, reused over the centuries as a baptismal font.

What to expect during the festival

The heart of the day remains liturgical: the solemn Holy Mass and the procession with the image of the Madonna through the alleys of the historic center, between the castle gate and the remains of the medieval walls and towers that define the village in concentric circles around the ancient castle. Surrounding the religious core is the traditional village atmosphere: convivial moments, gatherings between families and vacationers, and initiatives organized by local volunteers.

  • Eucharistic celebration and moments of Marian prayer
  • Procession of the image of the Virgin through the medieval historic center
  • Community gathering for local families and emigrants returning for the summer
  • Connection with other August festivities, starting with the feast of Saint Lawrence

August in Morro Reatino: a month of traditions

Those arriving for the Our Lady of the Rosary Festival will find a broader calendar. In mid-August, the Sagra della Pizzola takes place, dedicated to the typical fried bread dough served savory or sweet—a historic village event that celebrates its fortieth anniversary in 2026. Local cuisine also features pappardelle alla garibaldina and lamb with black olives, while the territory is generous with mushrooms, truffles, chestnuts, and walnuts. In winter, the living nativity scene in Morro Reatino is considered one of the oldest in the Montepiano Reatino area.

A village to discover

Morro Reatino preserves its original medieval layout, with its defensive walls, circular and quadrangular towers, and a network of alleys climbing to the top of the settlement. Just outside the village, nestled in the woods of Coste Lignano, lies the Hermitage of Saint Michael the Archangel. The municipal territory is also crossed by two major spiritual routes, the Way of Saint Francis and the Way of Saint Benedict: attending the festival can therefore be an opportunity for a walking stop in the Holy Valley of Rieti.

Why it is worth visiting

This is not an event built for mass tourism: it is an authentic village festival where the religious dimension remains paramount and hospitality is entrusted to volunteers and families. For the traveler, it offers a discreet immersion into one of the most characteristic popular traditions of the Rieti mountains, less than two hours from Rome.
