Twelve days of faith, music, and community in Villanova di Guidonia
The San Giuseppe Artigiano Patronal Feast is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when Villanova di Guidonia, a populous district of the Guidonia Montecelio municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome, comes together as a community. Established in the early 1960s around the young parish on Via Giuseppe Mazzini, the festival has spanned over six decades without losing its grassroots character, reaching its 64th edition in 2026.
The choice of patron saint is no coincidence. San Giuseppe Artigiano (Saint Joseph the Worker) is celebrated on May 1st, which coincides with International Workers' Day in the Italian civil calendar. In Villanova—a neighborhood that grew with the families of workers from the local travertine quarries and the aeronautical plant that gave rise to Guidonia—the dimensions of faith and labor naturally converge.
The most unique feature of the Villanova festival is its organization into nine districts, each represented by a saint. These districts animate the novena, participate in the inaugural mass, and help decorate the neighborhood streets. It is a participatory mechanism that involves hundreds of families, turning the festival preparations into a collective effort lasting several weeks.
Alongside the religious rites, the Festival Committee organizes a robust civil program every year, hosted in Piazza San Giuseppe Artigiano. Over the years, the square's stage has featured well-known names in Italian pop music—Fausto Leali in 2025, Orietta Berti in 2026—welcomed for free by an audience arriving from the nearby Aniene Valley and Tiburtino areas.
The civil program balances genres and generations: the final of the New Voice Talent singing competition for emerging local artists, dance and 90s revival nights, dance performances, sports events (judo demonstrations for youth), classic car rallies, and the Spring Parade organized by the Merchants' Association, which concludes the festivities alongside the highly anticipated lottery draw.
The day not to be missed is undoubtedly May 1st: a morning of band music and processions, a solemn mass at noon, and a square packed until late at night for the main concert. Those who prefer a more intimate atmosphere will find the most authentic and devotional side of the festival during the days of the novena.
Guidonia Montecelio is the second-largest municipality in the Lazio region by population after Rome, and Villanova is one of its most vibrant districts. Visitors coming for the festival can combine their trip with visits to other Tiburtino destinations: Tivoli with Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana (UNESCO World Heritage sites) is just a few kilometers away, as are the Terme di Roma in Bagni di Tivoli and the historic village of Montecelio, perched on its hill with views over the Roman countryside.
The 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Villanova di Guidonia opened on Wednesday, April 22, with the inaugural mass celebrated with the nine districts of the neighborhood, followed by the novena dedicated to Saint Joseph. The Festival Committee, chaired by the parish priest Don Andrea Massalongo, created a twelve-day program that intertwined liturgy and civil festivities.
The most anticipated moment was May 1st, the solemnity of San Giuseppe Artigiano: the Pietro Mascagni Band toured the streets of Villanova in the morning, the procession departed at 10:00 AM from the church on Via Giuseppe Mazzini, and the solemn mass was celebrated at 11:00 AM. In the evening, the square filled up for the free concert by Orietta Berti, the guest of honor for this edition.
The final days confirmed the popular vocation of the event, featuring sports, dance, and local commercial activities.
By car: From Rome's Grande Raccordo Anulare, take exit 12 (Via Tiburtina) and continue on the SS5 Tiburtina Valeria to Villanova di Guidonia; alternatively, take the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway, exit at Tivoli. By train: FL2 line (Rome Tiburtina-Tivoli), get off at Bagni di Tivoli or Guidonia-Montecelio-Sant'Angelo station, then take a Cotral bus. By plane: Rome Ciampino Airport (approx. 40 km) or Rome Fiumicino Airport (approx. 60 km).
Religious celebrations and performances in Piazza San Giuseppe Artigiano are free of charge, including evening concerts. Only lottery tickets and food stand purchases require payment.
During the main days, the neighborhood is closed to traffic and the local market is relocated; it is advisable to park in the outskirts and walk to the square. For the May 1st concert, arriving well in advance is recommended. For overnight stays, the widest selection is available in Tivoli and Bagni di Tivoli, just a few minutes' drive away.
