Feast of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, Patron Saint of Tivoli

A celebration blending faith and popular tradition

The Feast of Saint Lawrence the Martyr is the heart of the religious and social summer in Tivoli, a three-thousand-year-old city on the outskirts of Rome. On August 10th, the anniversary of the Roman deacon's martyrdom, the entire community pays homage to its patron saint with a program that weaves together solemn liturgy, popular devotion, and public festivities. It is one of the city's most cherished recurring events, officially recognized by the Municipality of Tivoli as part of the city's traditions.

Saint Lawrence and Tivoli: a thousand-year bond

Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of the City and the Diocese of Tivoli and Palestrina. The Basilica Cathedral, the Tivoli Duomo in the heart of the historic center, is dedicated to him and houses some of his relics. In the days leading up to the feast, according to established custom, the Saint's relic is carried in pilgrimage to the city's parishes—including San Michele Arcangelo, Santa Maria Maggiore, and San Biagio—in a journey of preparation filled with Masses and moments of prayer that involve the entire city.

The religious program for August 10th

On the day of the solemnity, the Cathedral welcomes the faithful from the morning with Masses at 7:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 11:30 AM. In the afternoon, at 4:30 PM, Eucharistic Adoration and the Rosary take place. The highlight is the solemn Pontifical Mass at 6:00 PM, presided over by the Bishop of Tivoli and Palestrina, Monsignor Mauro Parmeggiani, and concelebrated by the Cathedral Chapter, local parish priests, and clergy of the Diocese, in the presence of civil, military, and religious authorities.

The procession and the floral offering of the districts

At the end of the Pontifical Mass, the solemn procession carrying the Saint's relics winds through the streets of the historic center. This is the most anticipated and well-attended moment of the feast: the districts of Tivoli pay homage to the patron saint with the traditional offering of flowers, a gesture of devotion that renews the bond between the historic neighborhoods and their protector every year, accompanied by great popular participation.

Civil festivities: square, music, and fireworks

Alongside the religious program, the feast has a lively popular spirit. On the evening of August 10th, food stalls and a charity raffle open, followed by an evening of music in the square and, to conclude, the raffle drawing and a fireworks display. Over the following two days, the festivities continue with traditional games, raffles, and musical performances, while children can enjoy a treasure hunt through the neighborhood streets. The organization is managed by the Basilica Cathedral together with the Confraternity of Saint Lawrence the Martyr.

Tivoli, a city of art and tradition

The patronal feast is also a perfect opportunity to discover Tivoli, a jewel of the Metropolitan City of Rome in the Lazio region: Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Villa Gregoriana park, and the medieval historic center provide the backdrop for the celebrations. A few days later, on August 14th and 15th, the city relives another great religious tradition of medieval origin, the Inchinata, confirming that August in Tivoli is rich in history and spirituality.
