A village festival at the gates of Rome

San Vittorino Romano is a small historic village belonging to the Municipality of Rome, located on the eastern outskirts of the city in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. Every year in early September, the San Vittorino Patronal Feast is held here: a deeply felt tradition that transforms the village square into a pedestrian-friendly community space for a few days.

Visitors arriving from Rome find a setting surprisingly different from the metropolis: low-rise houses, the parish church overlooking the castle square, and a relaxed, small-town pace. The festival is the moment this identity shines brightest, thanks to the efforts of the parish, the festival committee, and dozens of volunteers.

The patron saint and tradition

The parish is dedicated to Saint Vittorino, bishop and martyr. Local tradition blends two figures: the martyr from the early Christian centuries and Vittorino the monk and hermit, later Bishop of Camerino, known for his austere spirituality. The Church of San Vittorino, built around 1100 on the castle square, was restored by Cardinal Francesco Barberini; the saint's image dominates the altar in a painting from the early 17th century. Over the centuries, residents have credited him with protecting the village from plague epidemics, a bond of devotion that remains intact today.

Next to the parish lies a second, even more prominent religious site: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima on Via di Ponte Terra, a pilgrimage destination for the faithful from across Lazio and beyond. The presence of the sanctuary gives the patronal feast a significance that extends well beyond the village boundaries.

How the festival unfolds

The program spans several days, typically from Wednesday or Thursday through the Sunday of the saint, with a final day on the following Monday. Recurring elements include:

• Procession through the village streets with the saint's statue, accompanied by a brass band;
• Memorial ceremony dedicated to the fallen, with military representatives;

• Youth participation in the liturgy and parish choir singing.

A village reclaimed for pedestrians

For the duration of the festivities, Piazza San Vittorino is closed to traffic. In recent years, this measure has been in effect from early September until the Monday following the patronal Sunday, with public transport lines (C9 and 042) diverted via Via di Ponte Terra and the sanctuary square. While seemingly a bureaucratic detail, it highlights the event's importance: for a few days, the village center belongs entirely to those exploring it on foot.
