Four evenings of popular devotion, Neapolitan music, and food stalls in the Pianura district
The San Giorgio Festival in Pianura returned to light up the westernmost district of the Municipality of Naples in 2025, after an absence of over twenty-five years. Nestled between the Camaldoli hill and the Phlegraean Fields basin, Pianura has rediscovered one of its most cherished traditions: the celebrations in honor of Saint George the Martyr, the patron of the parish entrusted to the Vocationist Fathers, the congregation founded right here by the will of Father Giustino Maria Russolillo.
The return of the festival was not a purely nostalgic gesture. The San Giorgio Group first, and the San Giorgio Festival Committee later, together with the parish, built the event on the voluntary work of residents, turning it into a symbol of collective redemption for a suburb that rarely makes the city's cultural pages. 'The true success of the festival is a united community' is the phrase organizers repeat most often, and it is also the key to understanding why this event matters so much in Pianura.
The heart of the festival is the stage set up in Piazza San Giorgio, where evenings begin around 8:00 PM and continue late into the night. Each evening has its own character: contemporary Neapolitan music, a talent show dedicated to local voices, Campanian folk music with the paranza, and the grand closing concert. To allow for the setup of structures, the Municipality of Naples issues a temporary traffic order each year affecting Piazzale Don Giustino Russolillo and Via Vicinale Sant'Aniello.
Alongside the performances, the devotional aspect remains clearly visible. The days begin with liturgical celebrations in honor of the Saint and culminate in the triduum; on the final Sunday, the statue of Saint George goes out in a procession through the streets of Pianura, accompanied by a marching band and a long parade of the faithful. It is the moment when the entire district reveals itself, with balconies decorated and families taking to the streets as the saint passes. Devotion to Saint George, knight and martyr, is widespread throughout Campania, but here it is particularly intertwined with the recent history of a district that grew quickly and is in search of shared reference points.
As in any self-respecting Neapolitan patronal festival, food stalls are an integral part of the experience: cuoppi, fried foods, sandwiches, and traditional Neapolitan sweets occupy the sides of the square for the duration of the festivities. There are also inflatables for the little ones, craft stalls, and a lottery, the proceeds of which help cover the event's expenses. Over the years, wellness and prevention initiatives and a morning dedicated to sports have been added, a sign of a festival that tries to speak to all ages.
Since 2026, the San Giorgio Festival in Pianura has been part of «Patronal Festivals. Blessed are those who live them», the series promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples, now in its fourth edition: twenty-six patronal festivals distributed between June 1st and October 17th in all city municipalities, all with free admission. Pianura represents Municipality IX and brings one of the most populous suburbs of the metropolitan city, in Campania, to the municipal program.
Visitors from outside will find an authentic popular festival here, far from the tourist circuits of the historic center: no tickets, a neighborhood stage, Neapolitan music enjoyed by the public that lives it daily, and a procession that has nothing 'folkloric' in the tourist sense. It is a concrete opportunity to understand how popular devotion works in Naples today, and to discover a side of the city that almost no guidebook tells.
One year after the return of the festival, the 2026 edition extended the program and raised the bar for guests, while maintaining the structure built in 2025: four consecutive evenings in Piazza San Giorgio, completely free admission, and organization entrusted to neighborhood volunteers. Coordination was handled by Michele Gentile, with artistic direction by Francesco Palmieri and Franco Monna.
The most significant novelty was the inclusion of the event in the official calendar of the Patronal Festivals of the Municipality of Naples, which in 2026 brought together twenty-six events in all city municipalities between June 1st and October 17th. For Municipality IX, this was a long-awaited recognition, which also brought children's entertainment, creative workshops, folk groups, and an exhibition dedicated to the Patron Saint to the square.
The calendar clearly alternated the two registers of the festival: the first three evenings dedicated to music, talent, and folk tradition, and the final Sunday opened by the procession with the statue of Saint George through the streets of Pianura and closed by the most anticipated concert. Throughout the festivities, food stalls offered traditional Neapolitan specialties, accompanied by performances by the marching band.
The first evening was dedicated to the ten years of Onda Web Radio TV, hosted by Francesco Palmieri and Rosanna Bennardo, with live performances starting at 9:00 PM. The stage featured Mantra t'Live feat. Lorena Bartoli, Miriah and Danyolo, Gianni Scardamaglio, mirodimare, Scugnizzi per Sempre, Nino Forte, Antonio Rocco, and PeppOh.
A two-part evening: first the San Giorgio Talent Show, a singing competition reserved for emerging artists from the district, then the performance of the Paranza di Romeo Barbaro, dedicated to Campanian folk music with tammorre and traditional songs.
In the morning, the Sports Morning with activities open to families; in the afternoon, the festival lottery draw; in the evening, concerts by Cuore Napoletano and Mr. Hyde.
The final day opened in the morning with the traditional procession in honor of Saint George through the streets of Pianura. In the evening, Francesco Palmieri's DJ set with hits from the seventies, eighties, and nineties preceded the final concert by Gianni Fiorellino with his 'Vai Tour'.
Piazza San Giorgio, Pianura district, Municipality IX of the Municipality of Naples (ZIP 80126), Campania. During the festivities, temporary traffic measures are in effect on Piazzale Don Giustino Russolillo and Via Vicinale Sant'Aniello.
Free admission to all evenings. Performances usually start around 8:00 PM, with main concerts from 9:00 PM onwards. Religious celebrations and the procession take place in the morning or late afternoon on the final day.
The square fills up quickly on the nights of the main concerts: arriving an hour early is the best way to find a spot in front of the stage. Food stalls mainly accept cash.
