Float parades and masquerades among the medieval towers, since 1926
The San Gimignano Carnival is one of the most beloved winter events in Tuscany. In the heart of the famous city of beautiful towers, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the province of Siena, the streets and squares of the medieval historic center transform for a few Sundays into a stage of color, music, and joy. The event is free to attend and is organized by the San Gimignano Carnival Association with the patronage of the Municipality of San Gimignano.
The San Gimignano Carnival boasts a century-long tradition: the 2026 edition celebrated its 100th anniversary, a milestone marked by special floats and the photographic exhibition «The last decades of the San Gimignano Carnival: from crisis to rebirth, to the reality of today», hosted in the Sala della Cancelleria on Via San Matteo. A century of history that reflects the popular identity of this corner of Tuscany, defined by craftsmanship, satire, and community spirit.
The heart of the festival is the parade of papier-mâché floats, handcrafted by local master float-makers. The tradition centers on the two historic districts of Piazzetta and Maremma, which engage in friendly competition by building floats inspired by satire and current events. The masquerade processions wind through the center, converging on Piazza Duomo, accompanied by the La Bandaccia band, the Giacomo Puccini Philharmonic, and roaming musical groups like Bandao.
The atmosphere is that of a genuine village festival, designed for all ages: confetti, streamers, masks, and music accompany adults and children through the narrow streets of the village. There is also a sporting element, with the Coppa Carnevale youth soccer tournament reserved for the 'Pulcini' categories. The final day concludes in Piazza Duomo with the awarding of the floats and the Coriandoli sotto le Torri (Confetti under the Towers) trophy.
Experiencing the Carnival in San Gimignano means combining one of Tuscany's most cherished folk traditions with the magic of one of Italy's most beautiful villages. Amidst its famous medieval towers, the festival offers an authentic, free, and family-oriented experience, far from the large summer tourist crowds.
