Popular devotion, processions, and a traditional festival in the parish courtyard of the Miano district, Naples

In Miano, a district on the northern outskirts of the City of Naples, in Campania, mid-October has always marked the celebrations in honor of San Gerardo Maiella. The heart of the event is the parish of Santi Alfonso Maria de' Liguori e San Gerardo on Via Teano, which for a few days becomes the gathering point for the entire neighborhood: street lights illuminate the area, the saint's statue is carried in procession, and families meet in the parish courtyard for the traditional festival.
This is not a major tourist attraction, which is precisely its charm: it is an authentic popular feast, built and lived by the residents, blending devotion, family memories, and unfiltered Neapolitan cuisine. Visitors will discover a side of Naples far from the historic center, where neighborhoods still revolve around their parish and their patron saint.
Gerardo Maiella, a Redemptorist lay brother born in Muro Lucano in 1726 and who died very young in Materdomini, is one of the most beloved saints in Southern Italy. He is venerated as the protector of mothers and children and as the "saint of the poor": expectant mothers and couples hoping to conceive turn to him for intercession. This devotion inspires the festival's most iconic ritual: the blessing of the handkerchiefs, small white cloths that the faithful take home as a sign of protection.
In the liturgical calendar, the feast of San Gerardo falls on October 16: the entire program of the Miano celebrations revolves around this date, with key rites taking place in the days immediately before and after.
The most convivial moment is the traditional San Gerardo festival, held in the evening in the parish courtyard. With outdoor tables, traditional Neapolitan dishes prepared by community volunteers, music, and lively conversation late into the night, this is when the religious dimension of the feast transforms into a neighborhood celebration, open to residents and anyone wishing to join. For many Miano families, this event truly marks the beginning of autumn.
On October 16, 2025, the Miano community officially opened the Gerardian Year, proclaimed for the third centenary of the birth of San Gerardo Maiella (1726-2026) and set to conclude on October 16, 2026. The opening Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Cardinal Domenico Battaglia, Archbishop of Naples, in the presence of the parish priest Don Salvatore Cinque and representatives of the 7th Municipality. For the occasion, the Apostolic Penitentiary granted a plenary indulgence to the faithful participating in the prayers and celebrations dedicated to the saint: a true parish jubilee that has given the 2025 and 2026 festivities a very special significance.
The festivities are traditionally concentrated in the week of October 16, with the festival held on one of the evenings immediately following the liturgical feast. The detailed calendar is released by the parish a few weeks in advance through church announcements, local neighborhood press, and the community's Facebook page: it is advisable to check dates and times closer to the event.
At the moment, the parish of Santi Alfonso Maria de' Liguori e San Gerardo in Miano, Naples, has not yet released the detailed program for the October 2026 festivities. The only certain and documented date concerns the conclusion of the Gerardian Year, set for October 16, 2026, the day of the saint's liturgical memorial: the parish jubilee was opened exactly one year earlier by Cardinal Domenico Battaglia, Archbishop of Naples, with a plenary indulgence granted by the Apostolic Penitentiary.
In previous editions, the festivities spanned several days around October 16, featuring the exhibition of the relic, the blessing of the handkerchiefs, the procession with the statue through the neighborhood streets, the blessing of the bread, and, on one of the following evenings, the traditional festival in the parish courtyard. It is reasonable to expect a similar structure for 2026, but until the parish publishes the official calendar, no festival date can be considered confirmed.
The program is usually communicated a few weeks in advance through church announcements, the parish community's Facebook page, and local neighborhood press. For direct information, you can contact the parish at +39 081 7030067.
