The patronal feast of this Vesuvius-area town, featuring a procession, music, and the Filangieri Award

San Gennaro is not only the patron saint of Naples: he is also the protector of Cercola, a town on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius in the province of Naples, Campania. Every year, at the beginning of autumn, the community gathers around its patron saint with a festival that blends religious and civic life, marking the opening of the long 'Autumn in Cercola' event series.
The most distinctive element of the festival is the unified procession: the city's four parishes—Immacolata e Sant'Antonio, Immacolata Concezione, Santa Maria delle Grazie e San Gennaro, and Santa Maria del Carmine ai Catini—join together in a single pageant that travels through the town streets. The procession converges on Piazzale Filangieri, the civic heart of Cercola, where a solemn mass is celebrated in honor of the patron saint. It is the moment when the Cercola community, usually divided among different parish districts, unites in a single act of popular devotion.
Alongside the religious observances, the festival offers several evenings of open-air entertainment, all with free admission. Recent editions have featured traditional Neapolitan comedy, live concerts ranging from jazz and rhythm and blues to classic Neapolitan songs, and the presentation of the Cesare Filangieri Award. This national recognition is dedicated to poetry, music, and photography, with a lifetime achievement award presented annually to a prominent cultural figure.
The San Gennaro Festival kicks off 'Autumn in Cercola', a calendar of events that accompanies the town throughout the autumn season, including the historic Honey Festival. It is a way to transform the patronal celebration into the starting point for the town's entire cultural calendar.
The San Gennaro Festival, the patronal feast of Cercola, will return in 2026 during its usual September window. The official dates and the full program have not yet been released by the Municipality of Cercola: they will be updated as soon as the administration publishes the 'Autumn in Cercola' calendar.
