About San Filippo d'Agira

Every year on the second Sunday of May, the Casalotto district of Piazza Armerina celebrates San Filippo d'Agira, the patron saint of farmers, with one of the most heartfelt and evocative folk festivals in the Enna area. The procession, considered the longest in the city, winds through the historic center from morning until late at night, amidst rose petals showered from balconies, fireworks, and the traditional cry of devotion: "viva San Fulè!". A religious and folkloric tradition deeply rooted for centuries in the heart of Sicily.

A popular festival in the heart of Piazza Armerina

In the town of Piazza Armerina, in the province of Enna, in the heart of central Sicily, the San Filippo d'Agira Festival is one of the most anticipated religious and folk events of the year. Although the saint's liturgical feast day falls on May 12th, in Piazza Armerina it is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday of May and is organized by the residents of the Casalotto district, centered around the 17th-century church dedicated to the saint.

San Filippo, patron saint of farmers

San Filippo d'Agira (5th century AD), known in local tradition as "u massèr", is venerated as the protector of farmers and harvests. This bond is particularly significant for the Casalotto district, once a rural village located outside the city walls. Popular devotion is expressed with great intensity: the statue of the saint and the reliquary arm are carried on the shoulders of the district's youth, while the procession is led by pairs of children dressed in traditional Sicilian peasant costumes, carrying baskets filled with local produce and seasonal crops.

The longest procession in the city

The San Filippo procession is considered the longest in Piazza Armerina: it lasts from morning until late at night. The parade starts from the church in the Casalotto district with the cry of "viva San Fulè!", heads towards the historic center, crosses the Monte district passing by the Cathedral square, and makes a stop at the Collegiate Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso. Around lunchtime, the procession pauses to allow the faithful to rest before resuming in the afternoon. Upon the saint's return to the district, residents pay homage with a shower of rose petals from balconies and spectacular fireworks.

The firriata and other rites

The festivities are preceded on Saturday afternoon by the traditional firriata, a shorter procession that today mainly involves the marching band and the bearers of the fercolo (processional float). Horses dressed for the occasion, carefully adorned with ribbons and sequins, accompany the most solemn moments of the day. Alongside the religious events, the weekend program usually includes civil and entertainment events, with music and shows that bring the district and the entire town of Piazza Armerina to life.

A tradition of central Sicily

For visitors, the San Filippo d'Agira Festival offers an authentic immersion into the folk culture of the Sicily Enna region, in a town already famous for the UNESCO-listed Villa Romana del Casale. The festival combines faith, agricultural folklore, and district identity in an intense and participatory day that renews the deep bond between the community and its patron saint every year.
