The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most important event of the year for San Michele di Ganzaria, a village in the Erei Mountains in the province of Catania, in the heart of inland Sicily. Founded in the 16th century, the town bears the name of its patron saint and keeps the deep bond between the community and the heavenly warrior Archangel—celebrated by the liturgy on September 29th alongside the other Archangels—within its Mother Church.
The patronal festivities take place every year in early September, reaching their peak on the first Sunday of the month. The feast is the grand finale of a long summer of events: starting in August, the village comes alive with shows, musical evenings, and community gatherings, building up to the days dedicated to the Patron Saint. The official celebrations begin the week before the main Sunday.
The week of festivities weaves together the sacred and the popular in the best Sicilian tradition:
San Michele di Ganzaria is situated in a panoramic position between the provinces of Catania, Enna, and Caltanissetta, in a rural landscape defined by olive groves. The patronal feast is the perfect opportunity to discover the village, its Mother Church, the ruins of the Castello Gravina, and a community that keeps its roots alive. For those visiting inland Sicily off the beaten path, it is an authentic immersion into local devotion and folklore.
The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel will return in 2026 to San Michele di Ganzaria, in the province of Catania, to honor the village's Patron Saint. At the moment, the precise dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published.
According to tradition, the festivities take place in early September, culminating on the first Sunday of the month, and include the solemn procession, folk evenings, the song festival, and pyrotechnic displays. The official calendar will be released by the Municipality and the committee in the weeks leading up to the feast.
The festivities are concentrated in the historic center of San Michele di Ganzaria (CT), centered around the Mother Church of Saint Michael the Archangel and the town squares.
San Michele di Ganzaria can be reached by car via the SS117 bis; the nearest motorway exit is on the A19 Palermo-Catania. It is about an hour and a half drive from Catania. The village is also connected by regional bus lines.
